Title: How to recreate this
Post by: BORIStheBLADE on April 18, 2008, 12:41:07 pm
I have CS3 extended.. if that helps and I'm trying to recreate this 3d effect with the hex shape objects. Can anyone shed some light on this?

thanks

You can get something fairly similar by using Adobe illustrator.

Make a polygon using the polygon tool, and add the 3D extrude and Bevel effect.  (See picture)

Anyway, that was just a suggestion.

Thanks! I'm going to give it a try this weekend.

Right on, that was pretty easy. I got a new one for you. How do I put a picture on a face of one of these hex shapes like the original picture I posted?

thanks

Well, I was going to suggest that you use photoshop to put the pictures in the hexes; however,  I found a cooler way.

Since I suck at explaining things, I have pictures for each step.

In illustrator
(1). I assume you have a piece of art you are wanting to use, so go ahead and place that on the screen.
(2). I chose this awesome piece of art.
(3). Go ahead and make your polygon again, then place the polygon over the artwork. Select both the polygon and the picture then right click and select "Make clipping mask."
(4). It should then look something like this.
(5). Do the 3d extrude and bevel again.
(6). Repeat 1-5 and you might even end up with something as sweet as this!

This is pretty helpful, because you don't have to stretch all the art individually to match each hex.

Anyway, I hope that helps.

exactly! Illustrator can do some very cool stuff.  Xara also is great if you want to throw some 3d text in as well.

This is pretty easy after you spend some time making mistakes. Here is what I have done so far. The scan lines aren't to my liking though.
