Here's the scoop.
Received this cabinet empty, It was a POPEYE at one point.
The bottom corners looked like a WOODCHUCK had been chewing on it.
Full of spiderwebs and the usual..
Another words, Anything at this point would be an improvement! ;D
I"ll let the pictures tell the rest of the story!
-
Here the WOODCHUCK chewed corners have been fixed.
And cab is primed.
-
Here red painted is starting to be applied..
And coin door painted and installed.
-
Here is the Bezel, Stickers, Marquee, T-Molding and Control Panel installed.
And pics of the sony 21" monitor decased, mounted and installed.
-
Here is the Monitor Mounted ..
And the Area around it starting to be painted black.
-
Here is the PC installed, 733mhz with a Pentium III
Purchased a old set of IBM pc speakers from a thrift store.
Pulled the AMP out of them, And wired it to the original speaker.
Sounds great !
-
Here is the finished product, Running.
I have MALA installed, With a DK theme and have about 28 Vertical games to play.
My ESC, PAUSE and COIN buttons are under the control panel box (out of site)
And the volume knob and PC power button are accessible through the coin door.
This is my first mame machine, And i am very pleased with how it turned out.
-
Nicely done !!
Glad to see you went with the red cabinet. ;D
-
Yes, i have always loved the original red ones.
Thanks so much ! :)
-
Looks good. :applaud:
-
Holy crap! Awesome job!!! Looks like a very clean build. How did you come across the old Popeye cab? I've been trying to find a Nintendo cabinet to convert to a DK but I'm not having much luck.
Also, how did you apply the paint?

One of my friends had too many projects, So he said i could have the empty cab.
I just used a foam roller from lowes.
The paint is Radiant Red from lowes also.
Thanks again ..

Fantastic build!
I'm very glad you posted the pics on how you mounted the monitor on the MDF. I have a very similar monitor and was afraid that mounting it like you did the MDF would give out and the monitor would rip right off!
Is the shelf on the bottom of the monitor helping to support the weight of it?

Thanks for the compliment!
No actually the shelf is not supporting the weight.
it was already in the cabinet.
I just move it down a bit, Because it was in the way.
Actually the MDF is stronger than you think.

Looks Great to me, dont know how anyone could even tell it wasnt the real deal just by looking. Hiding the admin buttons was a great idea. The repair work on the corners appears to have worked out very well. Always liked the nintendo cabs, feel pretty silly for selling the Donkey Kong I had.

Man, i gotta say.
Since finishing it. I play it everyday. :)
Thanks for the compliments.

Had someone ask me about my Mala DK layout.
Wanted it kinda simple looking for an old school feel.

As far as MAMEings go, this one looks like it's quite respectful to the original cab, so you get a thumbs up from me. Good job. :applaud:
-
Real nice job. Looks like one of the original Radar Scope to DK conversions. :applaud:
-
Good god man, that thing looks great. You could stick that in Steve Wiebe's garage and Brian Kuh wouldn't even bat an eyelash. It's exactly what I would do if I were to get a Nintendo cab. Great work. :applaud:

Don't worry, I would never destroy a classic cabinet.
I grew up playing these era machines.
I love them!
Thanks guys! Very much. :)
The only thing I'm not happy about.
Is that the monitor sticks out the back.
There was no way around it! :(
The original Sanyo monitors had a special shaped frame to prevent this.
My only option would be to cut a square in the back door.
And black spray paint a plastic square bowl, And screw it down over the cut.
Kinda like a PAC-MAN or MS. PAC-MAN cabaret.
If you have ever seen one of those?
Right now, I just have the back door off.
As I'm not wild about cutting a hole in the backdoor.
I'm trying to keep this cab original as possible.
-
Request fill for -------> barrel_hopper.
The back edges of my cabinet.
These are the best pics i could get.
Hope it helps ?
-
Wow that looks great! Thanks for the pics my friend. :applaud:
-
Was Red the original color of DK cabs?
-
Nintendo made a game called RADARSCOPE which cabinets were RED.
The game bombed in AMERICA.
DK was created to replace RADARSCOPE.
DK was placed in the RADARSCOPE's cabinets.
Making early DK's RED. :)

Bravo! Nice to see more Donkey Kongs coming back. This game is the reason I got turned onto MAME in the first place. I'm going to keep my eye out for a cabinet myself......

Sorry to bump an old thread but I'm curious if you have any more pictures of this thing - specifically the hidden admin buttons for MaLa. I am planning to do the exact same thing you did (Mame + MaLa and a game list of only 1 button 4-way verticals) and the more info the better!
Great job!
-
I have 3 buttons.
ESC, COIN, PAUSE.
Should have put the power button down there too.
Instead i put it inside the coin door. (What was i thinking?) :dunno
-
Thanks - that's exactly where I plan on placing some admin buttons on mine (exit, pause and probably coin). I'm also probably going to use your MaLa layout (if you don't mind).
-
Don't forget the power button down there! You will thank yourself later!
Sure you can use my MALA layout!
Im honored!
-
The cab looks fantastic -- I wish I had the confidence in myself to try one! :applaud:
This isn't a critisism, but does the t-molding only go half way round the bottom of the cab? Is this authentic?
I only ask, because I really haven't seen this before.

Yes, I promise you it's Authentic.
It was once a POPEYE Cabinet.
So, Yes that is the way Nintendo of America built it.
-
Quite beautiful.
How far does the monitor stick out of the back?

Well, you learn something new every day -- I never knew that. That is attention to detail for you!
Congrats again on a great cab ... :notworthy:

I can't get the back door on. But oh well.
I still have the back door saved.
Maybe a monitor change some day?
-
