Title: Arcade Assualt - Official Thread
Post by: thatitalian on April 17, 2008, 11:07:50 am
OK,

I decided to start my own thread on this as the project is in development stage and would like the advice, help and info from everyone in this community.

I went with this name for two reasons:

1. It is an Arcade machine - hence the unoriginal arcade.
2. Since I saw Organic Jerks Pixel Assault I always liked the name assault.

Arcade Assault - bringing an assault of classic arcade games to my friends and family.

First of:

The artwork is in development stage and quite near to completion. The CP is attached (still some minor changes to be made to it). Please feel free to comment and suggest changes, although don't make me cry  lol. More will be coming soon.

Plans are attached too. Now here is the problem (you knew that was coming didn't you!)

I can not figure out the length of the Bezel. I am crap with geometry as I haven't done it since secondary school and I have never used CAD.

So if someone feels like helping out a member I would love to have a CAD of these plans and in return the community is more than welcome to use them.

The monitor I am using is a Dell 19" LCD:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/1907FPV/en/about.htm

Wood is 18mm MDF (or 5/8")

ALL HELP AND SUGGESTIONS ARE APPRECIATED!

Thanks!

That monitor has a 20ms response time.
Maybe you should get a new one.

What would you suggest? I was thinking about getting a new one to be honest.

most these days are 5ms to 8ms, which is just fine. 20ms is too slow, especially for any twitch shooters.

If you find a 2ms for a good price, even better...

Thanks for the advice!!! :applaud:

What do you think about the Control Panel?

I've looked at your control panel thread every day (mainly because you keep bumping it!) and I like the CPO, but I'm not so sure about your use of red and black buttons on it. Seems like overkill on those two colors. Throw in some white buttons here and there, especially if your trackball is going to be white. (I don't know, is it?)

Yeah, I know about the bumping (couldn't get any feedback!).

The trackball is actually an illuminated red Happ 3".

The only buttons that are white are the player one and player 2 buttons.

Might add a splash of white to the space station at the bottom and the moon at the top.

THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK THOUGH! Much appreciated!

Any other suggestions?

A+ for effort, C- for the red explosion  :dizzy:  Although it is your setup, a little bit more contrast would definitely help.  Maybe some black sticks and black buttons?

What? It may have a lot of red, but the last thing it needs is more black!

The control panel, I suggest you move the buttons and joysticks up a bit higher so the side of your palms can have somewhere to rest. I find resting my palms on the edge of the control panel uncomfortable after some major playing.

I also think you should not put any buttons on the top of the trackball. It's very easy to press those buttons during usage. They'll just be getting in the way. Here's a mock pic of what my layout will look like. I wont have any admin buttons on my CP except for EXIT. Everything else will be shifted.

Whoah... this totally slipped by me...

I would definitely agree with Ef about placement, but I'm a personal fan of admin buttons (in moderation, I dont think you need volume)

On the art side though, I think what you've got is pretty awesome!

I think you should open up your color scheme a bit.  I think at this point you have Too Much unhealthy contrast and you need to neutralize it down.  It's all just jumping out at you and it looks a bit confusing.  But thats JUST the color doing that.

Just because your color scheme is black and red-based doesnt mean that it all has to be centered around the same shades of black and red.   Play around and use many different shades of both, going up and down the reds and working in different shades of gray and white also. (especially on the starburst lines, you should definitely make those a darker shade of red...their working way too hard on the eyes as is)

Of course, going through all the shades, you should always keep in mind that with a scheme like this, the thing you want to pop most is the button areas (especially if you plan on having buttons with the same colors).  So try using muted colors (or using less contrast) on the areas behind the buttons, so there is a good depth and pop to the way the CP looks.

This looke great man...awesome

Well thanks for all the support! I am still in the process of designing a logo as, my last one was a bit similar  ;)

Hopefully should have something a bit later!!!

Keep it coming though!!! This is very useful!

I've only been commenting on the color scheme and not the control layout. Definitely move the buttons/joystick up more for palm room, and I never have liked the buttons directly above the trackball (just the two buttons; the admins are okay, I guess).

Although I have never tested that layout, my gut instinct thinks that is a bad position for the spinner.

Yeah.....I don't like that spinner location either.

Looks like, with the spinner, that you'd have to 'hover' your 1P joystick hand, so you don't collide with it.  That'd be good for a game or two, but for a party, it might get a little tiring.  Dunno, juts my one cent.

You probably have enough room to line it up somewhere in the general straight line created by the joysticks and trackball. Between the player 1 buttons and the trackball would be good. Remember, your trackball does NOT have to be in the exact center of your panel. Offset trackball panels can be much more playable than panels that put the spinner in an odd place.

Right, I made some slight modifications to the panel.

I took your advice and moved the buttons and joystick up slighltly. I also moved the buttons for the trackball in order to make space for a possible spinner.

I will be posting tonight as I am at work.

I saw a thread on "the arcade mania" thread (Knievel) here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=58647.msg578324#msg578324

Check out the spinners at the bottom!!! Does anyone know where I can get these?

I really like the spinner at the bottom

No, actually doesn't get anywhere near it.

Hand on joystick

hand on joystick moved as far as it can go towards spinner.

You hold the stick in kind of an unconventional way. I reach over the top and would definitely hit that with the base of my thumb. I did an odd placement on mine too, but on the other side. This doesn't interfere with Player 2 and since its my least used control it works out fine.

Ok,

here is the updated CP and Marquee.

Let me know what you think!

So what's up with the player two start/coin button labels?

That is a glitch that I can't fix! I set the stroke to outside but as soon as I position it to the right hand side of the CP that happens!

Not sure what is causing it but it looks like I will have to rasterise the CP and add the text in Photoshop!

New and final Marquee.

Progress is moving slow at the mo as my exams are in 2 weeks!

As soon as they are done my time will be dedicated to this!

Let me know what you think!

You might consider bumping the title of the marquee down a bit or the retainer will get in the way.
