Title: Linux or Vista - the 64 bit Difference
Post by: massive88 on April 17, 2008, 10:22:31 am
Ok so I built my new computer, a 3ghz core 2 duo, and have run benchmarks in 32bit XP, 32bit Vista, and 64bit Vista.

64bit Vista with the 64bit binary blew the others away.

So the only question left for me is, would I see an appreciable difference in speed using 64bit Linux?

Id like to gather some opinions before I go through the hassle of setting up yet another OS and running benchmarks, though in the end Ill probably end up doing it all anyway.

So, any opinions?

Maybe.

In fact, almost certainly, if you use a lightweight desktop such as xfce or (window manager like) openbox instead of the increasingly heavy gnome or kde.

But speed is only one of the reasons you would install linux anyway ...
