So I went out today to accomplish the first step in the long process of building a cab...I bought the main pieces of MDF to use. I bought 3 8x4 foot pieces, and the total came to $120.00. I called another store in my area and the price was the same, but I think they might come from the same supplier. How much does it cost in your area?
-
Don't quote me on this, but I think in the area of $20-25/sheet?
-
Lowes.com shows a 4x8 foot section costing 23.47 in my area.
Unless they're cutting it for you, that company is taking your money.
-
Here in Kansas City you can get a 3/4" x 4' x 8' sheet of mdf for $20.
-
Unless, also, they are delivering it.
-
No, but I figured that was the case. I had to order 5/8" because idiot me designed the cab with the hardest to find wood in my area, so it wound up costing me twice as much. It'll be worth it to keep the weight down and save me from wasting my time (hurray for rationalizing), but oh well. Live and learn.
-
yeah, 5/8 makes a pretty big difference. ;)
$20 is pretty standard for 3/4" mdf.
-
yeah it was the size that costed more but at $40.00 a sheet that was way to much still.
-
If all they did was sell it to you, then yeah you got ripped off. Here in Southern California you can get an 8x4' 3/4" thick sheet of MDF for about $25-$26 at a local home depot. Buying 3 sheets with California tax included would come out to about $85 bucks total. I'm thinking you got gypped. Or are you talking about Canadian money?
The only thing keeping me from buying the pieces myself is that I don't have a pick-up to transport them.
-
If I could even find 5/8th I would be glad to pay whatever for it. Where did you order it from and are you in the USA?
NO ONE around here could get me 5/8th anything!!! :banghead:
So consider yourself lucky.

I used 3/4" mdf for the sides of my machine, but 5/8" for everything else (top, back, bottom, front, etc.) That way I could have the sides cut at Lowe's when I bought them to make them more manageable, and bought the 2'x4' sheets of 5/8" for the rest (since they didn't have the full sheets). I think it ran me close to $100 for all of it.
-
3/4" 4 x 8 MDF is about $27 at Lowe's in my area (Phoenix).
-
Here in South Florida, I paid $28.99 for (1) 4' x 8' sheet of 5/8" MDF.
I had to special order it from 84 Lumber.
-
Yup, you got ripped off. I got mine at Home Depot, 3/4", three sheets, and it was $90 and change (which includes the tax). I should be $25-$30 a sheet, definitely not $40. It's just sawdust and resin, no excuse for those prices. Getting the $30 might not be worth the effort of hauling it all back (that 'ish' is heavy!), but see if they can price match, based on your receipt. They might actually. If they don't, assuming they don't have a policy against it, threaten to bring it all back if they don't price match.
-
You ripped yourself off. :(
You should have asked how much a special order was going to cost. Live and learn. This should be a lesson to everyone - assume nothing when ordering something that isn't in stock.
-
I just don't see where he got ripped off. I have called every 84 lumber around here and they all laugh when I ask for 5/8th MDF.
At least this guy got some. I am going to call back tomorrow and demand they check their special order stock.

Or are you talking about Canadian money?
Ha - Canadian money is worth more now!!!
