Title: vertical games
Post by: NAH on May 27, 2003, 01:39:23 pm
I just picked up a gutted two-player coctail cabinet.  ;D I'm going to make the monitor permantly vertically oriented. I was wondering how I can get a list of all the vertical games without using a frontend and sorting out all the roms. I haven't installed all my software or worked on much of that stuff. Basically I want to make a contol panel for my coctail that will play most vertical games and also look good. The cabinet is a tomahawk 777. Thanks

You could use my vmame.bat rom sorter. It'll move all your vertical roms from your roms folder into a folder called c:\romsvert.
Or, the hmove.bat - which moves horizontal roms to c:\romshorz and leaves your verticals in your roms folder.

Thanks
I just found your list of vertical games.

Now, how about buttons

Who has the best control panel for a cocktail cabinet?

You're more than likely going to have to build the control panels yourself. Unless it's a generic cab similar to Pac-Man, in which case you could just buy a couple of Pac-Man panels, have a few holes cut to your liking for the joystick/buttons and wire it up to an I-Pac or Keywiz.

Some places sell metal Pac-Man control panels that are pre-drilled to your liking.

The attached photo is one of their panels in one of my cocktail cabs, it still looks a little rough, but you get the idea.

Joymonkey I have to ask how do you have finding a 3 button setup for playing most vertical games... Is it sufficent or would 2 or 4 buttons seem better. I am very curious about this and any feedback that you could share would be sensational. Cheers.

Mate on another note that cocktail cab looks sensational... I second HeadRusch.

The drill-hole around the joystick is really rough, maybe it's not so apparent in the photo. I need to figure out how to  get a piece of lexan cut with the appropriate holes for the buttons/stick to get it covered up.

The three button setup works perfectly. There are only a handful of vertical games that can't be played with this setup, but they're the ones with very obscure control schemes like SpyHunter.

Two buttons would be just as good; my fire3 buttons haven't had much use, but I thought it better to be safe and squeeze on as many buttons as possible while still keeping it simple. Four buttons might be overkill.

I use the small pushbutton for the KeyWiz Shazam key (similar to I-Pac's shift key) and it works out very well.

I know it's off topic - just like all the oohing and ahhing we're doing over the control panel pic...

Don't take this the wrong way,but... is that an arcade depot cocktail cabinet kit, or did you DIY? Looks sharp regardless, just wondering.

Yep, its an ArcadeDepot kit. I got a couple of them last week and they turned out amazing. I think the one pictured is oak with cherry stain.

I've DIY'd a couple of cocktail cabinets in the past, but they never turned out as good as the ArcadeDepot ones, and usually cost around the same.

The forum gods are fickle... and tempt them not, or we'll all end up in post hell (#9... #9)...

maybe because by the time a mod stumbled over this thread there was enough general discussion to move it out of just software forum and there fore stay in the main forum (for the moment)
