Right now I have a 4:3 19'' NEC LCD, which is nice and sharp, But the games don't look to be represented correctly on it. How do i create fake scanlines on it.. or do i just purchase a 19'' CRT.. although im concerned with the burn-in issues.. but want it to look more like it did in the arcade

Use mame's -effect option. More info in mame's docs/windows.txt file (search for "-effect" without quotes), and you can download the pngs over at Mr. Do's site (http://www.mameworld.net/mrdo/mame_artwork_supp.html) (see the part under "Effects"), and if you follow that link on Mr. Do's page and click on the "Mame Overlay Effects" thread, you can see how some of them will look.
Easier to look at the pictures than me try to explain it, but if don't understand something, we can help. :) (Just let us know what you need help in so we don't just retype what you've already tried.)

Ok, I got scanlines working.. but in arkanoid, pacman etc,.. the lines are verticle ? is there a way to correct this /?
-
The scanlines are supposed to be vertical for vertical games like pacman as the CRT was turned on its side.

If you want them horizontal on vertical games even though they weren't, copy the png file you're using, open the copy in a image editor, rotate it 90 degrees, save, and then ref that file for the vertical games.

I also saw a fishbowl effect to show the effect of a curved crt is this at all possible with the current mame build ? (http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/userfiles/108510-fbalpha.PNG) I think this is possible with FB Alpha? but id like to do this in MAME 124 Any possibilities this would be sweet!

that's awesome! I love that effect! Too bad MAME doesn't offer it.

I don't know... Does mameplus have it?

OMG that effect looks awsome... there has got to be some way to add that effect.
Edit: apperently stretchMame allows you to do this

Do you have Direct3D enabled?

I just played around with this emu. I've been meaning to but never had a strong reason. In the 'video' properties in-game, you have to select 'enhanced' (which is D3D7), and then '3D projection'. It's interesting in that it gives you a sort of monitor inside your monitor effect. It also carries over to the fe part, which is cool.
Effect rendering is equal in quality between 'basic' (DD) and 'enhanced', and stomps regular Mame. (I think it only gives you one type of scanline effect - the real kind.) As well, in the enhanced you can select scanline intensity, although this has an effect on the overall brightness. As well, the latest version seems to be far less resource hungry than Mame, as I've been writing this and flipping back and forth to FB while it's running 'attract', and no peformance issues. The latest Mame (using Ghouls and Ghosts) dogs my computer a little, and that's without using effects.
Some in-game feature differences seem to be: no tab or tilde menus, no pause. And apparent draw-backs are that it can't do complete fullscreen and isn't cab friendly (page menu bar and Windows task bar are visible, and all settings are done in-game through the menu, upper-left).

it's:
mame -effect imagename
where image name is the name of a .png file in your artwork folder.
