Title: PC game suggestions for a 2-3 yo
Post by: zaphod on April 09, 2008, 09:22:03 am
I seem to remember this topic coming up in the past but my search skills are failing me today.  I have a 2-1/2 yo daughter who loves to 'play' on the cab.  This usually involves me playing Marvel vs Capcom for her until I hurt, which doesn't take all that long these days.  In order to make slightly better use of her time, I'd like to see if there are any fun, learning games that might be cab friendly.  I'd like her to get some bit of real education inter-mixed with her classic video game studies.

You could setup a Snes emu and play the mario learning games.

The fisher price website has a flash game on it called Peekaboo I think.

Basically anytime a key is pressed something pops out and says Peekaboo. My 2 year old loved it (maybe 18 months, I don't remember). He could push the buttons or pull the joysticks and the game would react.

That gives me an idea.
Why not have a game that runs on your cab.
you can program the game to put pictures of the family in.
When the game is run, have several boxes that appear on the screen.
Maybe with pictures of cartoon animals on each box.
Have the child choose a box with the joystick then press P1 action 1 button.
Have the box open with a family members picture, with that family members voice saying "Peek a boo!"
Then when child presses P1 action 2 ,have the box close with a different cartoon picture on it, maybe a check mark.
Once the child has all the boxes checked, they scramble and he(she) has to find the family members again.
It would be a great way for the young child to learn the cab controls.
A game such as this could be played on the computer keyboard too.

SNES: Mario Paint (works with a trackball -- you move it around to 'paint' a picture)
Sega Genesys: Barney (yuck, but the kids like it), Richard Scarry's Busytown

We've played our fair share of WC Bowling.  She learned her trackball skills on that game.  Great fun!

We tried some quite-old, Dora PC game last night ('mouse'-based) and she liked it.  Had to help her with it some but I'm guessing next time much less assistance will be required.  They are like little sponges at that age.

I just discovered a game called "Magical Cat Adventure" - which my 3 years olds absolutely love. It is a clone of Mario Brothers but with better graphics. One of the 1st games that my kids truly "get!!" Give it a try.
