Post by: nick-g on April 09, 2008, 02:49:45 am
Has anyone tried the newest Mame version?  Does it work well?  Any comments, thoughts would be appreciated.

There was a lot of problems with the initial release, so it was reissued as 0.124a with some fixes.  Make sure you have the 0.124a or 0.124u1 version.  And u1 was supposed have fixed a bunch of others.

What problems are you having?  Or are you just thinking of updating and wondering if 0.124 is a good target?

I tried it, but the sounds don't seem as clear, nor are they correct on some games.  Most of the games I have don't even work in 1.24, so I went back to .84.

I'm using 0.124u1 just tested Simpsons bowling yeop sadly you are right that doesn't seem to be working any more...

just tested MK4... that works loaded fine, started up a match all working.. just running in slow mooooooooo heheh..... (DeLuSioNal29 good work brining life to the MA forums by the way ;))

I have a old .84 set gathering dust, but I'm currently in the update as they come mode at present.. compiling up the diffs as they come, great to see new games working / added.

Are you using a 0.124 rom set. If you're trying to run 0.124 with a 0.84 rom set then most of the games won't work. Your rom set needs to be matched to the Mame version number.

The reason your games do not work with the newer version is that there is such a huge gap in between your rom sets.  Did you use the "clrmame" utility to convert the roms to a newer set?

As for the sound, did you check your sample rate in the mame.ini file?  The default is 48000.

Thanks, we're gearing up for the next release of MA (Maximus Arcade) which should blow the old versions away.

It was really strange as I didn't see the mame.cfg file, so I couldn't figure out how to change settings around.  The video appeared to be squished too.  I'm keeping it on the desktop PC as Puzzle Bobble works 10 times better, but I'm going to continue to use .84 on my cabinet.

Stop teasing damn you.  I've been drooling over that feature list for a month!

Yes and No.   ;D  There are still a few pretty big bugs with the Zeus driver.  If you try and access the service menu (F2), the game locks up and will not release.  If you let it run through the attract mode for a few cycles, it will lock up as well.  Videowise, they don't have everything emulated quite yet so you'll see some graphical flaws as you play.

As far as I'm concerned, I would call it 75% emulated and that's about it.  I wouldn't call it "fully emulated" quite yet.

(I've got a 2.5 GHz Core2 Duo running Vista 64-bit.)

Sweet. I've been meaning to try it out but it's been low on the priority list since I'm fairly content with mala. I guess it's good that I haven't looked yet - I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for the update and check it out then. I assume there will be an announcement here.

Thanks for mentioning that. I've got all the 124 updates but haven't deployed them to my cabinet yet. I'd be disappointed to find simpbowl not working - that's one of the games I'm looking forward to playing more once I get my trackball swappable panel built in the next few days!

Is there a general consensus as to which version of MAME plays BOTH the older games and the newer games equally well on a modern PC- P4 to a Athlon 3800+, 512- 1 Gig RAM? Windows XP?

I've read people complaining that newer versions of MAME don't run the older games as well and was wondering if there is a specific version of MAME that everyone seems to agree is the best version that plays the older and newer games equally well?

Or is it best to run two different versions of MAME- one for the older games and one for the newer games?  Thanks.

I'm running MAME ver. 110 on a P4, 3ghz, WinXP home with 2GB RAM ... it plays everything I throw at it (well, except for Radiant Silvergun :P). The only slowdown/glitches I experience are those games that haven't been emulated correctly yet (see previous parentheses)

As such, I'm of the "if it's not broken, don't fix it" belief. That and I cant be bothered tracking down another full romset, since I already got one for ver. 110 (4o gigs worth .. sheesh!)

I am running version .119 and the Simpsons Bowling doesn't work.  Is that right or do I have a corrupt rom?  If my version does not run it, then what version does?  I'd like to try it and people who use my arcade have wondered why it doesn't work.

Thanks!

What do you mean by "it doesn't work"?  When you first start it up, you have to hold onto a specific button and reset the game in software in order to initialize the eeprom, I believe.  After that, it will work just fine.

Simpsons Bowling has an error, BAD EEPROM?

To play this game you have to have three files

simpbowl.zip

konamigv.zip

simpbowl.chd

You have to tell the game to run in service mode

When the error shows up hold F2 and tap F3.  Do not let go of F2.  This will reboot the arcade and run in service mode.  This only has to be done one time, the machine remains in service mode.

Thanks again!

Yeah, it works fine in 0.123 as long as you jump through the hoops to initialize it the first time.

I don't like the way it pops up with the data screen before each game every single time.  I was able to turn that off with version .84

You can do it in the new version as well, but you have to do it by editing the source code and compiling your own executable. It's not too difficult to do. One of the guys here, wrote a full step by step tutorial for compiling your own version of Mame.

I use 0.124 in my cab

It works okay, except it still doesn't take direct mouse input from alternative mouse devices (wiimote ;))... so I'm out on lightgungames with it...

Other than that, the whole having to see the stupid "type okay or move the joystick left and right" thing is accurate, you have to compile your own to get rid of that, a feat that many will tell you is a breeze and worth the effort, but I'll straight up tell ya it's probably not worth the effort.

Not all that hard to type OK before each game.  But I've been trying to play Joust and Robotron on my old 0.96 setup, and the game doesnt start.  Is there a trick to getting the games to start or are these two Roms just corrupt?

Williams games have a special startup procedure you need to follow the first time you run it. Try hitting F3 (reset) - I think that's it IIRC.

This is a fairly off topic question, but is Soul Calibur 2 supported in MAME yet?

If I remember correctly there is a command line switch to turn off the OK screen, unless that was removed from new versions.

Do a search here and see what you can find... (I'm too lazy to search for it myself).

I edited the cfg file on my old (.84) and it does not show that screen at all.  As a matter of fact, it does show anything except the game after I enable it.  I'm using Game Launcher front end and everything has been smooth since I put my cabinet together.
