Title: Looking for 2.5" laptop HD
Post by: urbecrisch on March 29, 2008, 12:51:10 am
Anyone out there have a wotking 2.5" laptop HD you are not using?  Any size over 5G will do and is it possible to have an O/S installed like WIN NT or 95?  Let me know.  Thanks.

I have a 60gig Hitachi TravelStar HD I sold on ebay, but the buyer hasn't paid yet.  If he doesn't respond by monday you can have it.

I'll go $33.50 shipped via priority/

Is there an OS on it?  Reason I ask is I was given a touchscreen monitor with CPU inside last week.  I was told the HD was shot so I would have to replace it.  Well, I bought a new HD but the problem is that I cannot get the HD to boot and I cannot boot from floppy, CD or USB :(  It's an older CPU but it does use a 2.5" laptop HD.  I'm looking for an older OS like Win NT, 95, or 98.   Is that possible for you to put on the HD?  Once I get the HD to boot I can add a PCI USB card I bought.  Until then, I'm a little stuck.

Also, the HD I bought was the same as the HD that was dead inside the CPU.  It's only a 6G cause the MB can only handle 8G.  It doesn't matter to me that the HD your selling is 60G, but will it work in the CPU?

Thanks again for the offer.

Why not connect the HD  you have to a seperate PC and load DOS perhaps?

With basic DOS loaded along with a cdrom driver, you should then be able to boot and load any of the older OS options you have discussed.

The adaptors to connect 2.5 inch drives to standard IDE connector can be found for < $5.

Write again if the above does not make sense.

I saw those adapters last night searching the web.  I thought the 2.5 to 3.5 adapters were to only transfer files/info from the 2.5 HD to the 3.5 HD.  Can I do it the other way around?  I have some HD's with OS's on them but they're all 3.5's.  I was just under the impression that I couldn't use a desktop PC to load/format a laptop HD.

Also, is there a tutorial or instructions on how to load DOS and then boot from the CD drive?  I'm not familiar with troubleshooting these kinds of problems since it's the first time I'm doing it.  You gotta start somewhere right?

Some harddrive companys, supply software tools, that will allow you to run diagnosics, and make a copy or make a bootable copy of a harddrive.
The above software should work for Windows 95 and 98. I am not sure, if the software wil work on WinXP.

2.5" hard drives are just hard drives that are 2.5"  3.5" hard drives are just hard drives which happen to be bigger.   They're all just hard drives, the size doesn't preclude you from using it on any computer that you are able to connect it to.  It's just a small hard drive.

Tomorrow I'm going to pick up a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter and connect the laptop hd on one of my desktop pc's.  I'll hook up the laptop as the master drive and then boot windows from the cd rom.  I should then be able to put the 2.5 back into the cpu and I'll be good as new...I hope!
