Title: DIY Lindbergh cabinet
Post by: Jakobud on March 28, 2008, 02:24:34 pm
Too modern for a lot of people on this forum, but still very nicely done imo...

I don't know if "modern" would be the phrase I would use to explain why I dislike it.

I think a more accurate reason (for me at least) is that it doesn't look like it has that arcade feel.

Besides dropping in consoles (I have a strong belief that consoles need to be played while you're lounging on a couch), the whole cabinet gives a very "un-arcade" appearance. The monitors are exposed to abuse (not that anyone in a home would), the vent screens, USB ports, side rails and lack of a coin mech all just screams "home use". To me, a big part of the arcade experience directly relates to the industrial nature of your typical arcade cabinet.

It does look nice and it really does fit in with the rest of the decor (as it were). I could probably even convince my GF to let me build a similar cabinet for our living room. It's just not a cabinet I would like to have in my collection.

Back to back, yuck.

Side to Side would be ok.

Flip those screens vertical and play Donkey Kong, priceless.

nice, but i wouldn't call this an arcade cabinet.
looks more like a desk to put your console(s) on imo.

I like it, but since I grew up in a arcade I would have a traditional stand up cabinet instead. I don't know if I can handle playing a fighter game sitting down.

Well of course it doesn't feel like a classic arcade cabinet.  Its based off the very modern Sega Lindbergh cabinets that are mostly in japan, which is where back-back and sit-at cabinets are popular, mostly for fighting games.

Man... you guys are all nuts! (and, of course, entitled to your own opinions)...  :)
I think the cabinet is awesome!

wow.. not arcadey in the retro sense.. but it would be awesome for modern arcade games and PC gaming!  Ones things for sure, there is no denying the craftsmanship that went into making it!

It doesn't really strike me as modern, it strikes me as not an arcade game. Don't think he really pulled it off to be honest with ya.

Who wants to play a fighter back to back?  You'd have to walk all the way around the thing to punch the guy in the shoulder for beating you.  Meanwhile the next match would have already started and he'd have you down to 25% life.
