Title: Mortal Kombat Restoration
Post by: MK3FAN on March 27, 2008, 08:53:54 pm
Just got this dedicated MK1 cabinet that at some point in the past was converted to UMK3. I alread have a (Mame) UMK3, so I converted this one back to MK1. As you can see from the pics, it wasn't in TOO bad a shape. Just needed some TLC. The only real "major" work that needed to be done was the MIDWAY sides of the CP. I had new decals printed up and just placed them over the bad sides after a good sanding. Turned out pretty nice. Anyway, here are some pics. I got the new CP overlay and the Marquee from Scott at www.mamemarquees.com All that's left now is MK4 and my collection will be complete!

Your side art looks kind of strange, is it faded?  Or is that just the camera washing out the color?

Yes it is faded. The machine was probably in the sun somewhere in it's past.

The only difference was on the MK1 cab. The front has beveled sides. Other than that, all the MK's were the same, yes.

You've got a great setup - I wish I had the room to do the same.

Don't fret the faded side art , it gives me the impression that your MK cab has lead a long and much appreciated life in the wild.

Just out of curiosity - where do you find competition? I've never much cared for playing against the computer and after 15 years of on and off play it's tough for me to wrangle live opponents who can put up a fight.

Well, I have all the machines set on "Difficult" because it's too easy for me on "Medium" or "Easy." Howver, the characters still have patterns and are easily beatable. I am perfectly happy playing the games by myself. My brother is my only competition and that's a stretch of the word. I do play MK2 online via PS3 though. Here are some videos of my gameplay...

They are character moves list cards that I made with Adobe Illustrator. I printed them all up on adhesive backed paper and stuck them around the bezel. Here is an expamle...

Those are really cool too.  Did you just print them out on your computer printer?  Actually, I was talking about the black plastic around your monitor.

That's the stock bezel, if I'm not mistaken.  I have an origanal MK as well, mine has the same bezel.

How do you like that internet enabled MK2 through the PS3?

Does the matchup system require alot of interaction or can you sit back and enjoy a stream of random opponents?

Pretty sweet!  This reminds me that I still want a dedicated MK1 or MK2 as part of my permanent collection.  I'll have to make some room in the not-so-classic part of the gameroom.  If I had my way, I'd have a mint MK1.

Love your setup. I can hear Shang Tsung laughing in the background as in the original MK.

Thanks Silverwind. I finally got around to moving the Star Wars Trilogy machine out into the garage (thinking about selling it), resulting in much more space. Still looking for a good dedicated MK4 cab to complete the collection. Here is a pic of the setup with more space.

Great decision. That left hand logo would bother the hell out of me.
