Title: Help! Donkey Kong 4 board to 2 board pcb swap?
Post by: Bender on March 22, 2008, 12:18:43 pm
Hi All,

I'm trying to swap my 4 board donkey kong PCB to a 2 board PCB (I've had a few little glitchy issues with the 4 board set and I've read that there are far fewer problems with the 2 board set and also the high sores standard is the 2 board set)

So all the wire connections match up except one (can't find a place to plug it in)
it is a 7 pin connector for the sound I think (I know the sound is no longer on it's own board on the 2 board set, does that mean that I don't need that connection? seems strange)
does anyone know what's going on here

Please help!

Ok I figured it out with the help of another thread

I looked at some of the pics in neilyboy's DK restoration
he was using a 2 board set and I could see that that cord IS NOT used on the 2 board set
so I took it out and turned it on and It works perfectly!

I did notice some sight changes in some of the sound effects, anybody know anything about that?

Quote from Steverd on KLOV:

"Yes, everything you need to switch out from the 4 board to a 2 board is already in your machine. They are even labeled very well. The only difference is that you won't need the "7P SOU" cables coming from the power supply. It should take you 5 minutes or less to remove the 4 board set, put in the 2 board set and power up."

Sound changes? Can you be more specific? I don't believe there should be any sound differences.

Which reminds me, do you still get that hum in the speaker with the 2-board set-up? It usually accompanied by a slight wah-wah-wah-wah repetitive sound in the background.

ah...So you CAN hook up a 4-board set w/ the same harness as the 2 board set?

Not sure about using a 4-board with a 2-board edge connector but you would need the extra "7P SOU" cables for the four board config.

The sound seem to have a tiny bit of distortion or maybe it's just a little louder?
The other thing I noticed is that the screen is crisper a very nice bonus I wasn't expecting!
The "Brightness" adjustment is different too with the 4 board set jut the brightness pot would get a very light screen background and now I have to use the "Screen" adjustment as well. works fine just curious.(I lighten the screen to center the image)

yeah it took all of five minutes to swap it out

On DK, there is an adjustment for the volume of all the Digital sounds.  We usually turn that pot up full.  You may wan to turn it down just a tad.  It could also be a bad cap in the output circuit if it's distorted.  The volume adjustment for the digital sounds is just under and to the right of the edge connector.

Thanks Mike!
turning that pot down a little seemed to fix the problem
