Lets just say that I know this guy who found this site two years ago and decided to build the ultimate three-sided cocktail cab. In fact, I have , I mean, he has spent almost $2000.00 on this thing so far. He set out to take all the best ideas, and a few new ones, to create a cocktail cab that will be mind blowing. :notworthy:
Any way, its 75% done and looking awesome. But this guy hasn't contributed to the site by sharing his new ideas and offering pics as he progressed. I know this guy kind of feels bad about it because every one on this site has helped in so many ways that I cant begin to list, like computer programs, to parts, to examples,..etc. :blah:
My personal opinion is that progress pics add to the greatness of the site. If this "scumbag" continues to leech of the site and not contribute, I think no punishment could be extreme enough! :soapbox:
-
Maybe he's too busy to post .. or shy.
Or maybe he works on a computer all day, and when he gets home, doesn't feel like typing any more.
-
I think you need to define scum a little better than in your post.
Scum is when someone downloads the whole book Project Arcade, from some :censored: questionable site and does not pay Saint the price of the book.
So looking at that and your interpretation of the word scum, I'd say you owe us a retraction.
-
hes not scum hes just hoggin all the fun :P
-
Well, he did buy Saint's book off amazon. But, think about this, What would this site be like if sooo many people didnt contribute?
Over the last two years ya think he could of found the time to post something. GUILTY, GUILTY, GUILTY!
-
Seems to me that I fall within the SCUM category you are discussing. I used this site back in 2000 to gather information about building a cab, and since 2000 I never posted once.
Now look at me, working on my 2nd cabinet and now I am trying to contribute back to the community. Some people "like me" are lazy/ work on a computer 15 hours a day and never get around to help others.
My Bad.
-
If all your money is stuck in your game how the heck can you afford a camera? ;D
-
I also know another scum member thats been here for a year (bought the book)
is still not finished, have to give up due to size of the arcade, and now has to start over and do a bartop instead (danm this guy's wife)
heh ;)
-
I typically post my progress pictures along with my completion pictures after my project is done. Perhaps they are waiting until the project is completed.
-
I don't see anything wrong with it.
-
I never posted any progress pics either (it was just another UAII cab, nothing noteworthy), so mark me down as scum too. ;D
-
Just post a couple pics of your cab and get it over with!

-
Have ya seen digital cameras now a days? :oIm looking at my wife's right now and there isnt a single spot that doesnt have buttons on it. :dizzy:
-
I didn't post any pics or progress of my mame cab since it wouldn't have just been just repeating the same advice that's already here on the forum countless times.
-
I don't post any progress for a couple of reasons:
1) There has been no progress for a couple of years anyway, on account of bigger life events.
2) Criticism.
More on (2): As of a couple of years ago, there was a small but vocal group of folks here who would dump on a design that didn't bring a zillion innovations into the world with it. Dunno if that's still the case. But nothing KILLS enthusiasm for your first tenuous steps into the arcade cabinet world quite like some oversubscribed dope telling you your ideas suck because you're standing on the shoulders of giants, instead of building a colossal ladder from scratch.
I'm still lurking here obviously, and there are plenty of great folks with plenty of good info to share. But it's hard to shake a lingering bad taste.
In the case of your buddy, maybe the guy is just shy, or isn't ready yet, or doesn't think his ideas will help anyone. :dunno
-
There are people who are dedicated and disciplined who start a project and don't stop working on it until it's completed. Something like a MAME cab comes together very quickly for them. Then there are people who, after two years, are only 75% complete. The latter group knows that they are going to take forever to finish the project. Maybe he just doesn't want to post starting pics only to have everybody asking what the hell happened to the project a year or two down the road. It's fine. When he's finished with his project he can post pics/info. Or he can not. No biggie. Posting on message boards isn't for everyone. Hell, I had been reading this site for months before I even realized the message boards existed.

:dizzy:
Actually read the first post..? (SpeedEng probably did..)
..In fact, I have , I mean, he has spent almost $2000.00 on this thing so far...
Anyway, rackoon, it's never too late to start posting. Just start a thread on Project Announcements and tell us more ;)
Have fun with your projects

Man, there is NOTHING wrong with reading, learning and not posting. I encourage reading and getting as much know-how as you need. Participation is up the individual.
Best,

Nahh. I think in order to be considered "scum", you have to talk some reprehensible smack about somebody else's project, without showing your own. Not having a project of one's own while doing same, or having one that is worse than the one the smack is referencing is also pretty inexcusable.

If that's scum, then I am probably fairly scummy...
But hey if our basement renovation budget didn't vanish into real life, I would have alot more progress... so .....it's not my fault....
PLEASE LET ME LIVE!

What are you waiting for? Post them! They better be good now that you've hyped them. You'll only piss us off now if you don't post them.
-
Scum is someone backhanding a little girl off her feet. It's not a guy who found info on the internet and used it to build a game cabinet. It's great when people post what they've done but I see nothing wrong with the people who don't show anyone.
-
All I have to say is, I don't believe a word of it. It is simply just a fig newton of yours or his imagination.

Impossible to accept or believe.

Not a chance
Any way, its 75% done and looking awesome.
Probably only 50% done and looks like he used a dull saw blade to hack and chop every cut.
My personal opinion is that progress pics add to the greatness of the site.
Yet to be proven.
I think Scum is too harsh a word for the given situation. Perhaps exaggerator or outright fibber. Only time or more precisely pics will tell.
-

Yup, my current project is to have MAME play off of my digital camera. Already has most of the buttons I need. Just trying to figure out how to install that trackball.
*lol*
-
I sort of forgot to take pictures, plus you guys are so good that I'd feel a bit embarassed. Maybe my second project!
-
I am Scum, uRebelScum. ;D
-
So, anyway...
Where is rackoon ::)

Some "trash talk" is inevitable, especially when the builder posts the project expecting comments and criticisms. I think I would be more likely to excuse Knievel of such conduct (noting that he has never done such a thing, just that his projects are that good :) ) than a certain other member, who in the past would unkindly deride some aspect of everyone else's project, never showing his own. And when called on it and it finally was displayed, it was easily worse than any of the projects he had attacked. IMHO, this tends to be a far more egregious "crossing of the line".

I wasn't trying to tease anyone, its just that I was wondering if anyone out there felt as guilty as I do for not contributing as much as I should. Because, the fact is, without this site I just couldn't do this hobby and looking at other people projects over the years has really been a inspiration. :applaud:
I don't have time to do an official announcement yet; I'll get to it soon. But, what if I get my wife to take a picture, post to this thread and do twenty hail Marys, do ya guys think that would be redeeming? :dunno
-
Just snap a few pics of what you've done so far, and make a quick topic in the "projects announcements" section. What's the big fat hairy deal? 8)
