Title: ArcadeVGA + Windows Server 2003 = ?
Post by: damdai on March 21, 2008, 10:21:46 am
Does anyone have any experience/success running this combination?
I am trying to install an ArcadeVGA PCI-E graphics card on a Dell XPS Gen 5 running Windows Server 2003 32-bit connected to a WG D9400 arcade monitor. Using the VGA connection, I am unable to get a signal to the monitor at any point, including the boot up process. Using the DVI connection, I was able to get a signal just once, during boot up, but the signal was lost once it got to the login screen. I have been unable to reproduce this, meaning I can no longer get a signal during any point of the boot process using the DVI connection. I brought the card to work to test on a computer here, running XP, and was able to get the signal from the DVI connection to a standard PC monitor. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ultimarc is on vacation until the 24th.

I suggest installing XP.

I've determined that it's not an OS issue since the BIOS won't even show. I was able to remote desktop to the PC, check the device manager, and this is the error that the display device had: This device cannot find enough resources that it can use. (Code 12) I've been scouring google looking for possible solutions, but none have worked so far. Very frustrating.

This turned out being an issue with Dell. I'm not sure if it's an issue with all Dells, but it was a problem with 2 that I tested.  An XPS Gen 5 and Dimension 3000. I don't know exactly what the problem was, but someone explained it to me as the Dell not being flexible in how it allocates resources to devices, and the ArcadeVGA not being flexible in how it acquires them. I picked up a barebones shuttle as my dedicated mame pc and everything works now, in all it's native glory.

Summary:
 * This was not an OS issue.
 * This was a hardware issue specific to Dell, and possibly others.
 * Shuttles are nice.

P.S. - Why does the XPS weigh 80lbs. when the Shuttle weighs 10?  :censored:

P.P.S. - For anyone who is interested, the mame pc I built is more than capable, and I got it for $330 from newegg. Specs:
    Shuttle XPC case with motherboard, powersupply, fan, and onboard HD audio ($170)
    P4 3Ghz processor ($70)
    2GB ram ($45)
    80GB SATA HDD ($40)

I've read about that over at MW and almost mentioned it except for something a bit back made me think it might be otherwise. Well, good you got it running.
