Title: Degaussing question
Post by: tba on March 18, 2008, 02:58:00 am
i decased a TV for my cab and for whatever reason whenever i move my cab it gausses (is that even word) really bad!

i made a degaussing coil out of some wire but i guess i didn't use big enough wire as it kind of caught fire/melted the insulation   :-[

anyways, after some poking on the 'net i found a site that claims i can use a "magnetic tape eraser" (which i happen to have lying around... i use it to find tiny screws i drop on the carpet)

now here is the question... i don't trust random sites on the internet, but i do trust info i get from here... so can anyone confirm this works and/or is safe? i don't want to damage my picture tube or the screen mask!

just buy a manual degaussing wand from ebay, just type in "degaussing" and take your pick

If all you did was decase the tv..... it should still have a degaussing circuit built in. So if you move your cab and then turn the set on, doesn't it degauss itself?

None the less, your magnetic tape eraser is probably nothing more than an electromagnet which is essentially what a degaussing coil creates when it is powered on.
Heck, a plain mildly strong magnet (but not toooo strong) can be used to a certain degree as well. But any "alternative" methods really need a safe technique when being used. Start by keeping your distance from the set and work your way outward. If need be, move a bit closer and repeat. No guarantees implied...... trial and error.

I just duct taped two speaker magnets to a 1" paddle drill bit, pointed it at the center of my monitor, and spun it at full RPM while pulling back slowly worked great.

Although, the problem was started by the same magnets before I fixed it, so the magnets for the damage and repair were the same strength. That may have something to do with the way it turned out....

well  Mauzy, THAT was original !    sure an interesting way to obtain an alternating magnetic field    ;D

I saw somewhere on the nets that many people use this method with hard disk magnets. Might have been on these forums. I only used the speaker mags because thats what I used to screw up the monitor in the first place, so I knew the strength would be right.

Improv seems to be the father of invention.

EDITED for spelling...twice!

Like i said , i just decased it, but i did rotate it to a vertical orientation, i don't know if that makes a difference. Like i said though, the degaussing circut on the TV is no longer wokring...

the magnetic tape eraser is a "60 Hz alternating electromagnet" designed to erase "magnetic media"  (sheesh,i actually used to use this on computer disks)

anyways I'm going to give it a try and let you know how it went.

UPDATE: OK, i bit the bullet and tried it... moved the electromagnet slowly towards the screen and about 2' away saw the distortions and circled the screen a few times while slowly pulling away and... WOW, it did a great job  :applaud:! The screen is clear as a bell. for the first time in quite a while!

:soapbox: as always your mileage may vary... use this info at your own risk.
