Also, for the Aussie's on the board, you may know the G8 as the Holden Commodore.  They brought it over just as the GTO was the Holden Monaro, and the new Camero is also based on a new Australian platform.  Those Aussies can definately build some great cars.

Hehe... Sorry, but that was no Goat...

That Monaro was a freakin jellybean. At least the Commodore has some lines. Still not there yet - but closer...

The only people that didn't like the GTO were those that never drove one, or those that have to have something flashy.  And it was definately a Goat, the original GTO was an originary sedan with a big ass engine and that is exactly what the new one was.

Except that the Monaro got its styling cues from an oval...

I like the performance, though. The G8 on the other hand holds some promise; we'll see what a few years do, that is if it isn't canceled after 2 years, like the hugely successful GTO...

Sorry, brother - I get the feeling you may have one of these cars, and I can't fault you for liking the performance, but you've got to admit the car is a bit bland. The original GTO had style - and a big ass engine. The big engine concept is the only thing these two generations share.

And yep - I'm more of the flashy type. I drive a TransAm now, and am planning on buying a Corvette. Who knows, maybe the G8 will grow on me...

You do realize that they only planned for the GTO to be out for a total of 3 years right?  It wasn't cancelled after 3 years, that was all they planned to have it for from the beginning.   Pontiac had just gotten a new president and he loved the classic GTO and saw that its 40 year anniversary was coming, so he searched to find what car in the GM lineup would fit the bill and he fell in love with the Monaro and brought it over.  Every car was completely built in Australia and shipped over on a boat, which is why they had such limited numbers.

And yes, the car from the outside is a bit bland, which I actually prefer to have a bit of a sleeper instead of something flashy with a big aluminum wing.  Besides it was the amazing interior that ultimately sold me on the car.  No one can say the interior was bland.

Just curious, in your TransAm, how often do you get a thumbs up or a comment about how much someone loves the car?  In the GTO it was a minimum of once a week for the 3 years I owned the car, and no that is not an exaggeration, it was actually pretty crazy.  I have a bunch of stories of people telling me how much the love the GTO, some of my favorites are the guy how wanted to have a conversation at 50 mph about how I like the car and that he wants to buy one or the guy at a fast food window who popped his head out and said "I'm not here to help you, I just wanted to tell you I love your car."  or the time I parked in front of a mall for 10 minutes and when I came back there were 10 people looking at my car (this one was back in 2004 shortly after the GTO came out) so I talked to them about the car for a while.

For a bland car, it sure turned a lot of heads.

Sorry, I can go on and on about why the GTO is a great car, and like I said, the only people who don't like it either never drove in one, or have to have a flashy car.

See that's the difference between me and you - I buy a car for me, you buy a car for the attention..

And, funny thing is - I just got a thumbs up and had a conversation about my car just a few days ago - I pulled into Harbor Freight and parked next to another same year TransAm. A guy was checking out both our cars and commented on how you don't see that every day (2 third gens next to each other), and nice car! (He liked mine better!)

Besides, I prefer a little faster car - my baby isn't stock. When I get the Vette, I'll actually be getting a slower car! I'll have to work on it to get up to the performance level I'm used to.

Anyways - let's chalk it up to preference...

Haha, make up your mind.  Either it's too bland or it gets too much attention, I don't think it can be both.  And when I bought the car, I did buy it for me.  I waited for the new 2005 Mustang to come out (came out around Sept. 2004) because it was the new flashy car everyone was talking about, but after test driving both the mustang and the GTO there was just no comparison.  At the time I had no idea it would be an attention getter and figured it would be a bit of a sleeper.

Performance is one nice thing about the LSX series of engines, if it doesn't have enough of it for you, then they're easy to make a whole lot faster.  ;D

Fair enough that it's just a matter of preference, but I'm still betting you never drove a GTO  :)

For some reason the links aren't working for me. Found the clip on YouTube and it looks cool  8)  :edit: Ah, I didn't have flash installed

I have to agree on the preference thing. Personally I'd take the Monaro over the Knight Rider car, but I can see how other people would like the coolness of driving a noticeable car. Guess I'm just too old for that. On the other hand the Monaro/GTO looks like a powerful car and car enthausiasts will recognize it easily.
