Title: After all the Mame32 games...should I get anymore?
Post by: RikaKazak on March 16, 2008, 05:06:39 pm
Well, I now officially have every game possible for the mame32 (that's compatible of course) and was curious if there were any other "must have" emulators?

I was also curious if things like N64 emulators worked well or not with a control panel instead of a classic controller?

What do you guys think/have for your own machines...more emulators or is 6,500+ games enough?

I just can't get too interested in other emulators.  The world of MAME is vast and could take years to explore fully.  I dinked around with several of those other emulators first, then finally figured out what I really wanted was a MAME cabinet.  So, if I was satisfied emulating consoles or home computers, I wouldn't have ended up here anyhow.

The other thing I have to say. . .  Is that most of the consoles and home computer systems you can emulate are better played like the originals: sitting in front of a TV set with a gamepad in your hand (for console games) or in front of a keyboard and monitor with an Atari joystick (for computer games).  Putting them onto a MAME cabinet, to me, wouldn't seem like an improvement at all.

6,500? Jesus! I only have about 400 on my mamebox that are worth playing.

If you like Dragon's Lair or any other laser disc game, then you'll want daphne.

RikaKazak,
I enjoy having the consoles I grew up with emulated on my machine, but it's all a matter of taste.

IMO your N64 or Playstation emulation experience would be crippled on a standard arcade control panel; you really need that analog stick.  If I wanted to emulate one of those systems, I'd get my hands on an N64-to-USB converter (usually dual-purpose N64 / PS2), integrate the adapter into the front of my control panel or maybe underneath,  and set up my emulator to use the real classic controllers.
A middle-of-the-road option might be something like an Ultrastick360, but I've never tried it.

I agree.  I just started playing around with Daphne.  Dragon's Lair is a blast when you are not pouring quarters into it.

Lots of N64 games play ok with digital controllers, but the N64 controller has just too many buttons. You may have to assign controls on a game by game basis. Also I don't know how front end friendly PJ64 is.

You may also try NullDC. DC has some fantastic translations of arcade titles that MAME can't play correctly. Lot's of high quality shmups and fighting games. Most of them play well with digital controllers and a few buttons.

My list

MUST HAVES

Mame
NullDC (dreamcast)- for those hard to emulate mame games like NFL Blitz and Gauntlet
Daphne (laserdisc)
Model 2 emulator (Some very sweet games included)
Zinc (sony arcade emulator - similar to ps1 hardware)

Play around with (often look worlds better then mame):
Raine
Nebula
Cps3
FBA

Cosole systems other then dc that work

SNES
NES
Genesis
N64 - if you have a gamepad
