Title: Nec multi sync crt monitor question

Just picked this up for a mame, I don't know much about monitors, question is if this is multisync does that mean it will handle various mame resolutions or do I still need AVGA card to get proper res.?

multi sync means it can process several different scan frequencies and thus, differing resolutions.

All normal PC monitors are "multisync" - but that does not mean they are any good for mame/AVGA use.

What you actually need to know is the input specifications of your exact monitor.

NEC made totally normal PC monitors called "Multisync" which will not work with an AVGA's arcade modes. NEC also made some rather impressive  presentation monitors that support all known arcade video modes natively. Not all there presentation monitors are the same though. Some will support 15Khz/24Khz/31Khz. Others just 15Khz/31Khz.

Whats the model number of the monitor?

It's a NEC multisync E1100+  21"crt monitor.

So that will only go down to 640x480 and hence will not handle CGA or even EGA arcade resolutions.  You don't need an ArcadeVGA in other words (you will have to just run everything at a higher resolution and have MAME scale it).
