I just did a cap kit on a U5000 in a Cruisn USA today When I started the screen was dark and dull. So I replaced R811 and that actually helped brighten the screen, then I capped it with a Bob Roberts kit. Screen is still dull, the cap kit didnt do anything. I noticed while doing the kit that Bob has some descrepancies in what originally installed, but what really caught my attention was that C729 wasnt even installed at all and there were a couple of other spots that seemed someone did some work on..Is that part of the U5000/2000 power supply update kit to leave that cap out?? Has anyone done the power update opn this chassis? I didnt install the cap from Bobs kit just in case since it was working without it, but now Im wondering if that cap might be my problem or my tube needs rej.
This just hasnt been my week for monitors,,,I have 6 25" monitors with problems(2 K7000 that I listed in another thread, another K7000 that has some kind of funky dual flyback on it that blows fuses, a U2000 with no vertical deflection, U5000 with dull image above, SI325 that I cant adjust the width on{not the width pot, some other kind of issue} ! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

have you look at the wg site yet?
they seem to give a few fixes for your problems
btw width not working could be down to transistor, cap or east/west diodes

replace these caps on the crt board .
three 10uF caps for video coupling to the video processor
a 100uf for 12v b+ filtering for the processor
i don't recall at present the other values ( besides vboost cap 10-22uF@250v)
4.7uf @50 etc..?

Has the SCREEN voltage on the flyback been fiddled with?

U-5000's generally had those crappy Zenith picture tubes. Check yours on a rejuvenator.

I'll second what Ken said. I've tossed more of them damn tubes than I care to think about....

yes, zenith did have some bad crt's torwards the end ('95) ( prone to grid shorts !)
lucky goldstar ( LG ) bought 'em out and then really produced some crappy tubes .
poor contrast/color - no matter what one tried. by the late 90's , they were outsourcing tubes.
for some reason the sets started to look considerably better ;D
