the pc in my cab is currently running intel celeron (i think)1.6ghz processor 256 mb ram and a nvidia geforce 2 mx 400 graphics card i'm using mala as my FE and MAME 0.121 with the latest video card drivers which made a difference its nice and quick in and out of the menu's on mala but on a few games killer instinct 2 ,narc etc.... its really juddery
they work fine on my normal pc (amd athlon 64 3400+ with 1gb ram onboard graphics)) so i took the 1gb of ram out of that one and put it in my cab pc but it made no difference can i over clock the intel safely and would this work? and can some one tell me how to it please
Cheers ;D

Well, I think it would be alot easier to use an older version of mame.

Thanks what one would you recommend? should i go back a couple of years or try one from 2003 and do you have to uninstall the mame i've got now or just install the older one over it?
-
You don't have to uninstall anything. You could just install the new version in a new folder.
You should try 112, 106, 101, 98.
Of course try 112 first. If that one works well for those games that are giving you problems stick with that version. If not keep going back.
Just to let you know. I'm using 0.37b16 on my 400mhz Celeron. :D

I'm using FastMAME .84 on a 733mhz with 384 MB RAM.
Runs great.
-
mame makes improvments on each release so going back farther probably will only make them run slower and worse.
I dont see how your going to get better results using old out dated software.
it's your pc not your mame version
-
^Slower? Going back makes MAME faster!
-
so your claiming a older mame version of KI or KI 2 will run better then the most current?
how so?

Mame considers improvements usually to be in the field of accuracy.
More accurate emulation, usually means slower emulation.
Older mames can be faster, but if you are looking at some more recent games, like Killer Instinct, going back isnt going to help you. Its just a question of not enough power to handle the bigger processors in that cabinet.
Your only hope with KI on that computer is to deal with the problems that Ultra64 presents, because nothing else will give you a playable solution.

does ki,ki2 and narc etc... run smooth with this set up as these were some of my all time favorite games if not i'll have to update my pc but i'm just trying to keep costs down
i cant try nothing at the moment coz my graphics card died i should have a new one arriving tomorrow and i'll give it a go

When talking about slower PCs, most people only take into consideration older games. Of course you can't really run newer games on a setup like that.
The classics run, and everything up to the early/mid nineties runs pretty good (I play Neo Geo perfect, Capcom fighters run great, but MK, of course, runs like crap).
I haven't tried Killer Instinct on my arcade, only my main computer. (Dual core 2ghz)
When you consider the fact that I can't run Donkey Kong on my arcade unless it's an older version, yes, MAME has got slower (new sound routines).
-
You need a fairly beefy PC to run KI or KI2 full speed. My cab cant do it and its running an AMD XP 2400.
I dont think its going to be possible to run it at a playable rate on Mame on his computer.
Ultra64 however, can run it just fine, but it has some errors. But thats probably better than not running at all. Google U64Emu to find it.

huh ???

Donkey Kong switched from using samples a short while back to finally emulating the sound properly. Now it actually takes a good system to run Donkey Kong full speed. Here's what the compiler of MameUIFX32 told me back when I had issues

And it sounds terrible, anyway. Samples were better.

You're entitled to your opinion. I think the samples sounded like ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, and once the sound was properly emulated it actually sounded like the machine I knew and loved while growing up. The samples sounded more like the home consoles. Something about them was just "icky".

It does sound terrible. On my main computer, the sound is really muffled now.
Since I have an older mame in my cabinet, I'm using the samples and they're better than the current emulation. Not accurate by any means, but better sounding for sure.
