Title: Can we keep it? PLEEEEASE!
Post by: protokatie on March 10, 2008, 06:57:20 pm
Well, for 2 days a kitten has been mewing and mewing and mewing all around the cabin I live in, so I finally let it adopt me. In all my adult life, I have never had a pet, so this is different for me. Hell I even called the popo station to report a missing kitten. So now I have some stuff set up for the kitty, and now have to be more responsible than I was before. Hell, if kittens are only 1/10th as demanding as human children, count this as birth control...

Also, the kitten is purring at you guys...

ps, how do you get a kitten who purrs constantly to stop purring? The only times he doesnt purr is when he is asleep or eating...

Slap it.

Seriously, purring is a happy sound, don't try to stop it.

Sorry about that, it's fixed.

According to the article slapping the cat might make it purr more.

Purring is sort of a stress reliever for the cat.  It works pretty good on the people around it too.

For me, the answer to the cat's purr lies in this fact:

"It seems that the measurable Hertz of a cat's purr lies between 25 and 150. Coincidentally (or not) it has been found that sound frequency in this range can stimulate bone growth and healing."

For an animal that spends up to 2/3rds of it's life sleeping (16hrs per day, in cycles), it's a viable evolutionary trait to promote bone growth and healing while in this "stasis". NASA has even studied the effects of these frequencies (and other variations), on Astronauts, in the hopes of discovering a way to engineer suits that oscillate enough to deter bone and muscle deterioration in space.

As it is now, the astronauts have to spend an inordinate amount of time working out to avoid atrophy.

No animals were harmed in the making of this thread.  Let's keep it that way.

All cats kiss your butt until they know they are set. Once it knows it has you hooked, you'll be lucky to be blessed with a fart in your general direction. :laugh2: :laugh2:

This is true.  Also you know they want something when they act all cute.  Mine wont do anything unless they are hungry or want their cheek rubbed.  Stupid little buggers.  Make sure you have a piece of scrap wood for it to scratch and make sure you teach it not to go near the arcade cab.  They like to scratch anything and think tall structures are for climbing.

Also, no kitty my pot pie.

My cats are both a few years old and they both still want lots of attention.  They constantly want to be held and/or petted (which can be a major pain when I'm trying to work), and if I'm walking around my house they often follow me around.  One of them even comes every time I call his name (the other one only comes some of the time).

One trick I learned is I always do a specific whistle when I give them a cat treat or new toy, so now if they're outside and I want them to come inside, I just do that whistle and they both come running.

I havent named him yet, I am still waiting back for the police if someone is missing him. Right now I just call him "Kitty", which I admit isnt the most origonal name in the world but meh.. I was thinking of naming it "spot" after Data's cat tho. ;) If I do get to keep it, maybe I should hold a poll on this site and have people vote what the name should be...

you're a good guy.

I was at a friend's house and a kitten ran out of the woods and followed us back to his house.  It didn't have a collar and my friend already had a cat, so I took it home.

YEARS later my friend told me that kids in his neighborhood were calling out for "Tiger" the day after I brought the cat home.

He was a black and white striped cat, so they were probably looking for a different cat.

I named him Pundamilia, which meant zebra.
(It was in a HS school book I was studying, after the novelty wore off that name became a pain to say so I just called him Panda)

I like cats.  They're a lot smarter than dogs, and a lot less work.  Kitty's not such a bad name.  I almost named my cat Gray Cat, but my wife wouldn't go for it.  She's named Penelope instead.  Like Dartful's cat's name, it's too long.  She goes by Nell, most the time.  Sometimes even Penell, which is a little strange, but the name just developed . . .

My cat's name is Kitty. Easier to remember and it is easy to say. She also comes to you if you whistle a certain way. It is a little weird. You can call her name 100 times when she is at the end of the bed and she will hardly look at you. As soon as you whistle, she is up in your face. Very strange but cute.

PS.

I like cats.

That makes me think of my favorite bumper sticker. It says, "I like cats...they taste like chicken."  :laugh2:

No?  It sleeps on the coffee table usually or on the top backrest of a chair.

Kitty is a good name.  I also like Mittens, Ewok, or Dune Cat.

I would not name it mittens unless I was an eleven-year-old girl.  You aren't an eleven-year-old girl are you?   ;D

Who knows.  The important thing is you name it.  Call it Kit or something ridiculous like Shmokes  ;).  Wait theres an idea, name it after a forum member.  Id name it sooner rather than later just so it gets used to its new label.  Also spot is acceptible.

And extra points for the name reference.

I'm almost about to name the cat "toilet", and the reason is crazy. Whenever I flush the toilet (or even go into the bathroom) the cat is fascinated by the damn thing. If the cat is downstairs and I flush the toilet, he comes running upstairs and runs into the bathroom, and will stand peeping over the toilet watching the water go down, then rise back up... Is my cat insane or something? I discovered my kitties toilet fetish by accident, but it works out well, since right before I head out the door to go to work, I just flush and can make it out without the cat under my feet begging for more wet food... (I feed him an unlimited amount of dry food, and one can a day of wet; he eats the dry food when hungry and the wet as soon as I plot it in his bowl. BTW, anyone here know the proper feeding stuff for cats? I always had the assumption that you use dry food as the "just in case and always there" food and the wet stuff once a day to aid in nutrition and to keep the cat from scratching the fuggle out of everything...)

The purring thing reminds me of a cat I had once. Someone had made a mistake and wired it wrong. Whenever it felt happy it would hiss and when it purred you'd better watch out because you were about to be scratched and/or bitten.  :dunno

That should be fine.  Everyone I know who has a cat does pretty much the same thing, although some (including myself) feed them wet food twice a day instead of once, but as long as they have dry food it doesn't matter too much.

I used to just feed my cats whatever meat I was eating that day, cut up small if necessary.

I never feed my cats wet food.  I use a Avoderm dry food and it's awesome for the cats...even better than some of the other high end cat foods.

Your cat needs something solid to chew on regularly.  That's how they clean their teeth and keep them strong.  In the wild they'd be chewing on bones to do that - if it's all wet food they aren't getting proper dental care.  Even if it's mostly wet food, causing the cat to ignore the dry food because the wet food is tastier, you have to ensure the cat exercises its teeth regularly by chewing on something hard.  Sometimes the only way to do that is to keep the wet food limited enough that the cat will eat dry food out of hunger.

We have 3 cats,  2 of them are 8 years old and the other is 18!  They've had nothing but dry food their entire lives.  We just leave plenty of dry food down and they eat when they want.  Actually we leave the dry food up, out of reach of the dogs.

Out of curiosity, he's not a brown and white kitty is he?  I was wondering if the two I got from the pound were long lost relatives....Dexter and Emilio are definitely two of the most retarded cats I've ever seen....either that or they're smarter than I think they are.

They break every mold I've read about on here about how elusive cats are.  These two will NOT leave  you alone.  Sit down, they're in your lap....or, at least they try to be. You see, they apparently can't sit / lay down, or forget they have claws, or something...because what they proceed to do is dance around on your lap, trying to figure out how to hang on, before tumbling out of your lap.  Then it's hop up, try again, fall out....repeat ad naseum.

Stories I could tell.  When we brought them home, the shelter says leave them in their cardboard containers while you're out of the house  ( this was the next day) since they're not used to it.  Well, we did that - only to get home and find that Emilio had chewed his way out of his container, opened his brothers, and the two of them were now lying happily on the table.  They did that for weeks: a friend said "spray the table with bleach, they won't get up there again."  Wrong.  Sprayed the table with bleach and these two idiots got  up there and rolled around in it, sniffing it like catnip.  Crisco, same thing (they actually licked the Crisco off the table).

When I brought one of my cats home from the pound, I put his box in the bathroom, where there also food, water, and a litterbox, and the second I left the bathroom and closed the door, his paws were reaching under the door trying to figure out how to open it.  So I open the door and he comes running out, he runs back and forth all over my house and then tackles my other cat.  I guess he was sick of being confined to a small area and he definately had no fear of new people and places.

Had to give Kitty up. Turns out I was so allergic to kitty that I had to leave work due to nose bleeds. Ive had several in the past week. Well, luckily I got the guy who I pay rent to to take him. I will end up paying for him to be neutered, since I want him to have a home and there is no way I am going to have him put down.

This sucks... I loved my little adolescent kitty  :'(
