Title: What do you use for the 'accelerator' function?
Post by: Avrus on March 10, 2008, 01:49:10 am
So some of the games I really enjoyed were the Super Sprint and Offroad series.  My intention was to use the spinners for driving type games but I seem to be at a snag.

The 'pedal' function in Mame is intended to be mapped to an analogue control (makes sense).  What do you guys use as a work around?  Just map it to a pushbutton and call it a day? 100% acceleration or 0%?

Map it to a pushbutton and call it a day. Think of it this way, when did you ever, EVER use half throttle on super sprint? Most people just planted their foot and steered like crazy, the fancy people occasionally took their foot off after a spin but I don't think I ever saw moderate use of that pedal.

I agree. Just use a pushbutton. I actually find SS to be one of my most played games since I built my cab, and it is surprisingly fun to play with the spinner. I am better at it with the spinner than I used to be with the wheel.

Yeah a pushbutton will do, but I have to say some games definately benefit from having an analog pedal. For example it's easier to pull away without wheelspinning in OutRun.

Speaking of Outrun, what's the best setup if you have joysticks and buttons only? (well, I have a spinner, but that's out of the question)
Every time I try it in mame, it doesn't seem quite right.

i use my left u360 as the analogue control for the gas pedal...works like a charm with super sprint & the like...

a buddy of mine & i tried to play spy hunter yesterday to no avail though...way too many buttons... :'(

So how do you go about making the pedal / accelerator a button? Manual INI editing?  The MAME UI doesn't seem to want to accept the mapping when I press it.

Thanks for the reply. How about somebody with standard joysticks and buttons? (I'm using Happ Universals and Happ concave buttons)

Also, with my two player setup, how would I go about setting the shifter to Joy 2? Every time I try to set the buttons up in Outrun, it gets all goofed up somehow.

Analog input ports have three inputs.  The first, "xxx Analog", is for mapping analog devices to the analog port.  The other two, "xxx Inc" and "xxx Dec", are for mapping digital inputs devices to the analog port.  For example: an analog input, say analog joystick, would be mapped to "xxx Analog", say the x axis.  OTOH, if you only had a digital 8-way joystick, you would need to map joyright to "xxx Inc" and joyleft to "xxx Dec".  Mame will not accept digital inputs to the "xxx Analog" part, so...:

For pedal, just map your button to the "Pedal x Inc".

One thing to watch out for is mame automatically converts an analog device's input to digital if mapped to any digital port, including "xxx Inc" and "xxx Dec".  If your analog device isn't acting as well as you expect, check and make sure the analog axes are NOT mapped to the "xxx Inc" or "xxx Dec" ports.

Personally, I would forget it...

It's Outrun. You can't just forget Outrun.
I may wind up building a CP with a steering wheel I can change out, but until then, I wanna play it however I can.

Oh I know!!

That's more like it ;-) I just meant really you can't play OutRun with anything other than a wheel.  You can get away with a digital throttle, but you need an analog wheel.  I'm looking forward to the day my suitable control panel is done...until then I don't play OutRun!

Me too, and eventually I hope to have 2 Mini racer wheels mounted next to the U360's for side by side racing on games like super sprint and the like.

I had Outrun dedicated cabinet...well...Turbo Outrun.  I grew bored with it when I played through the entire game in all of about 30 minutes.

I do regret making the trade I did when I got rid of it though.

Out run is "perfectly" playable with a digital joystick by tweaking the analog parameters you will have the sensation of playng the Genesis/Megadrive version though

As someone wisely stated in a similar thread:

You just plant your foot (or finger) on the accelerator and skid sideways to slow down!

Many of my friends accuse me of driving my real car the same way.

I drive my real car that way. Are there any other ways?

Agreed, it isn't as cool without the right controls. Outrun isn't a game I take that seriously, though. Pole Position on the other hand I do. I've about pushed that game to the limit of not having a throttle pedal. PP2 is barely managable, and I've only just barely finished the race once on the Fuji track...and maybe the Test track.

Very true...you *need* an analog pedal in PP so you can ease off slightly round corners and just hang behind cars while you wait for a gap.
