Title: My plans to make a DK/Nintendo Style Cabinet Template
Post by: barrel_hopper on March 09, 2008, 08:39:01 am
Ok here is the deal guys. I tried to build a Nintendo style cabinet ala Donkey Kong as a project. I found I am inept when it comes to getting those curves down on wood. Here is what I want to do in the next month or so.

I am going to go buy a sheet of MDF and clamp it to the side of my cabinet. I am going to trace out the side onto the wood and fill in any gaps to make it perfect.

I am then going to cut said wood out into two sides and make them a perfect match to each other. Once all this is done I am going to trace the final product out onto a huge sheet of paper.

From there I am going to cut that paper into 8x11.5 inch squares and number each sheet. I am going to feed all of the numbered sheets into my scanner and distribute the numbered jpgs free of charge in zip format.

This sound good to you guys? I don't want anyone to have to agonize over not being able to get something down on wood like that. It ruined my whole week. From there as I build this machine to the spec of the DK JR machine sitting in my room I will post more measurements in fractions and not decimals. Then make a few more templates of other parts of the machine.

I have gotten a lot of help here in a very short time and I want to give something back. I also think the Nintendo style arcade cabs are some of the most beautiful in the world.

I urge anyone who has these cabinets in there home to do the same thing...lets get these templates out there to help others and also help preserve the legacy of these great machines!!!!

Thanks for listening guys and gals....now it is my turn to listen to you.

Thanks,

Adam S.

Are Jake's plans too far out of whack to be useful here ?

For me yes...but they are good plans. I am just dyslexic as heck and cant get them down on the wood so I would need a real size template. Trying to use jakobud's plans drove me insane. For a more talented and smarter person they are perfect plans. I checked some of his numbers to my machine and they seemed to match up.

Actually I was just curious if there was a problem with the plans because they can be scaled and printed to individual pages and then taped together.

In the measurements that I have done for cabs, we often end up in the same spot once things are assembled and different people try to print templates (e.g. there is always a scaling issue when you try to print single pages on printers with different border widths and folks get confused about sizing, etc.).

I just don't want to see you go through a lot of work for people to end up in the spot that we're already in.

I totally  :applaud: the effort, however.

Your enthusiasm is nice to see, but Cheffo is right. Combine the Jakoplans with a tutorial I put together, and you could have this done in a few minutes.

I thought you were away -- has MC vacated so it is safe for you to return home ?

ha ha ha real funny. I only have a moment, and then I'll be away again.

Attached is a quick and dirty Jakobud to Visio to PDF document I created with page numbering. I just guessed at the size, but it should give you a good idea of how well it could turn out and is a million times easier than the process originally described.

If you can mount the sheet of mdf right on your existing cabinet why not simply clamp it in place and use a router with a flush trim bit attached right then and bingo cabinet piece done.  Then mount MDF piece #2 onto the piece you just cut and route it also.  Done.
