I'm trying to decide what to change the windows startup and shutdown sounds to and whether or not to run background music when browsing the front end (or sound effects for scrolling through games, etc.). I'm just curious as to what you guys are doing...
-
Total silence. I'm a bit paranoid about using unnecessary resources ;)
-
j,
I've got a bunch of sound effects I could zip up a send to you. Some familiar, some generic.
-
"Beware, I live!" <--- Best startup sound ever.
Other good ones:
-The music from the first Ms. Pac-Man cutscene
-The start music from Galaga
-The music from Donkey Kong before he jumps up and down in level 1
-
"Beware, I live!" <--- Best startup sound ever.
:applaud: Agreed!! Though I'd never use it myself .. I still get a chill down my spine whenever I play that game. :o
-
my machine is dead silent. even the computer that runs it is dead silent. i love having it quiet.
-
My cabinet plays the pac-man start sound when booting and the donkey kong "die" sound when shutting down. There is also the hum of the flourescent light which dies down after a while. :)

I've got the 4 arcade ambiance sound files that alternate.
-
Mine is going to be a Family Guy based cab, so I'll probably have some Stewie Phrases randomized for Start-Up, and maybe have one of Peter Farting as a shut-down noise.
-
Mine's silent too.
I've got a friend who had some annoying music on his front-end for about a year.
Now his is silent too.
Startup and shutdown sounds would be neat, but the music loop in the front end is annoying.
-
I'm setting up MameWAH for my cab right now, and after listening to a lot of music, I've decided none of it would have lasting appeal, so I'm using Arcade Ambiance '83 at a medium volume. I have the Defender startup sound as my startup, Qbert credit sound when starting a game, and Mario death music when shutting down.

Sent! The file is around 7.5 meg. Let me know if it's too big and I'll split it up.

I just checked my email and it's not there so maybe it's too big? Maybe try uploading it to megaupload and just post the link (or send it to me).
Thanks!
EDIT - It's there!! THANK YOU!

My Windows startup is PacMan
My Windows shutdown is Mario Bros - dying
My Mamewah startup is from War Games "Want to play a game?"
My Mamewah shutdown is from Berzerk "Chicken, fight like a robot!"
-
Right now, the only one mine makes besides the whir of the CPU fan is a beep when the monitor degausses itself on startup ;) I've thought about adding a few arcade sounds for startup and shutdown though.
-
Windows has no startup sound, but I enabled the AtomicFE startup video, which sounds awesome!
-
mine runs windows 98. initially i changed the start up sound to the 'getting killed' sound on berserk. but everyone, including myself found that way too jarring. so now its the space invaders mothership getting hit (",)
eventually im putting atomic fe on there and ill just leave the default sounds. forgotten what they are now but i know theres at least one donkey kong sound in it...

Not at all. I'll take care of it straight away.

Please bear in mind that these aren't all "winners" and the stock Mamewah sounds are mixed in, as well.
Enjoy!

Not sure if it will rip the voice bits from games (thats what I am hoping for) but this may be what you are looking for. I've been a sack and have not messed with it yet.

I ripped some Atari sounds using M1 from RoadBlasters. I have sounds for FE startup/closedown, menu open/close, menu option select, start game, quit game. That is about it...you can have too much.

Althugh, "like" isn't a sound byte in the game Berzerk.

Althugh, "like" isn't a sound byte in the game Berzerk.
I'm not sure I follow. What word is it if it isn't "like"?
-
Pacman theme starting up and shutting down I have the MCP voice from Tron, it says
"STOP, PLEASE, YOU REALIZE I CAN'T ALLOW THIS!!"
I like that one a lot.

Well I went through the "samples" folder, heard each sound byte, and renamed the files to what they say in the soundbyte...

In none of them, I found one where they say the word, "like." Unless you have something completely different I don't know about. Since the word "like" is not in there, I can only put them together to say "Chicken fight a robot". There was no "like."

By the way, I just made this one... >:D

Sample 26 in the berzerk folder of the zip file linked in my previous post is "like". Or at least it sounds like "like" to me. ???

I've got the 4 arcade ambiance sound files that alternate.
I have the same mp3's sound files (by Hofle) running in the background as ambient noise too. My front end chooses one randomly at startup.
There are 4 mp3 files total (each about 60 minutes long or so) that sound like you are actually in an arcade in a specific year.
- 1981
- 1983
- 1986
- 1992

You know the worst thing to do to someone is give them an idea, right? :soapbox:
Well, after DLing those files (and actually listening all the way through 92 just to see what sounds I could pick out) think I may want to make an arcade98 to add to the list. I want to do it a little bit differently tho.
1. I want to draw up a map (overhead view) of the arcade games that will be used in the sound file, and place them like they would be placed in a "normal" arcade from c. 1998.
2. I would use that drawing to map out the volume and left/right pan/seperation from each location
3. I would make a mix of the sounds for each location on the map (but I would mute the sound of the "game being played" (IE the location you "picked" by playing a certain mix)
4. Include games that were common in 98 arcades (duh ;) ) (IE include some classics, as well as some of the games that helped cause a mild resurgance in arcades in the late 90's) (Im thinking area 51 as an example)
5. Cross fade the beginning and end so there is no fade out.
If anyone likes this idea, and would like to help:
1. list some games that were common in 1998 (Arcades still have mspacman, so include the old ones still common as well)
2. Draw a crude overhead map of an arcade and label 10 (that is the limit for the number of game audio tracks I will bother to mix) of the cabs in the arcade for games popular at the time. (Possibly putting the 80's games near each other, and then 90s games near each other as I will be using distance and direction the "player" is facing to control pan and volume)
If people can help with good suggestions, I would like to work on this. Audio mixing can be tedious, but in reality it is rather straight forward for something like this.
So basically, this would end up as 10 separate audio files, each being based on a "location" of a game in a virtual arcade, so for people who want to include a crude drawing of an arcade, dont skimp on the cabinets not being featured as obstructions (or any other obstruction or feature). I will use those to alter the volume from specific cabs if an obstruction is in the way.
After that, it will be the long task of recording MAME games audio plus other recording stuff, and the long arsed process of mixing 10 audio files based on the layout.

Your right! I heard it as "might" but after re-hearing it, it is "like." :dizzy:
I can't figure out what 16.wav sounds like. Can you understand it?

I liked the music out of my sega genesis roms

Ditto. It sounds so sweet too and I can pick out the individual sounds and the game it originates from.

Somunny... thanks so much for the upload, much appreciated!!

I added the "Space Invaders 12" sound as the sound when you pick a game from the list. It's an explosion or something. Pretty cool - I have to play with the other sounds...
-
Since my cab is a Simpsons themed "Moe's Arcade" I have the "Flaming Moe's" theme play at Windows Start up (actually that song is over a minute, so I edited down a 20 second clip). Then, from Wargames I have "Shall we play a game?" at Mamewah startup. I have a few short, non-annoying clips for the sounds within Mamewah.
My grand idea is to eventually setup some ambient noise in the background all the time, of an arcade. Let me explain. There is a program called "Atmosphere Deluxe." It is designed to give you like rain forest sounds, etc. for a calming atmosphere. It is totally customizable, so you can add your own sound effects. It gives you control over randomizing sounds, volume and frequency, etc.
So to set it up, I would load sounds of several games' attract screens, and also gameplay. I could set up like 20 or 30 games' attract screen sounds to play at random intervals, and then those same games some gameplay at longer random intervals. It's difficult to explain, but basically what you end up with is a bunch of arcade games in the background being played alongside some games just sitting there. I could also add some random crowd noises such as indistinct chatter, even the occasional jukebox song.
The software is called Atmosphere Deluxe and it's under £20. http://www.relaxingsoftware.com/atmdeluxehome.htm (http://www.relaxingsoftware.com/atmdeluxehome.htm)

The only sound effect I use is PacMan's death at shutdown. I'm otherwise silent but may add simple beeps and boops to the interface (MaLa) at some point.
I sometimes play 1983 Arcade Ambience on a nearby stereo system but I rarely want the chaotic ambience when I'm focusing. :)

Well the sounds only play until game launch ...
