Title: Locking a file in XP only?
Post by: gonzo90017 on March 04, 2008, 04:54:05 pm
Okay here's what i'm trying to do. I wan't to lock a file in xp so it can't be deleted. What program can I use to do this? The file I wan't to lock is a image of the OS I made using Acronis True Image. I'ts in it's own seperate partition. But the file must be usable when using the Acronis Rescue cd. Can this be done.

Edit: I found a solution. I downloaded a program called Drive Manager (http://"http://www.snapfiles.com/get/andrivemanager.html"). which lets you hide drives or partitions and Acronis's Rescue CD can still acess the hidden drives.

Even though you already found a solution, wouldn't it be possible to just make the image read-only by setting it's "read-only" file attribute?

I do understand you want to protect the image from being deleted, but I'm not completely sure who/what you want to protect the image from.

With kind regards,
Spiderstyle

If it's read only, it will just say, "This file is read only. Are you sure you want to delete it?"

Yep, true.

That's why I was wondering who/what he was trying to protect the image from.

If it would be a Windows user, a simple click on the "Yes" button when asked if sure to delete the file would delete the file.

I'm planning on selling pc's and people tend to not know what they're doing and are just too "click happy". If they delete the image the Rescue Cd would be useless. That's why it's better for the partition to be hidden.

If your not using simple file sharing, and using the proper way for NT to deal with users and permissions, you can just change the permission and ownership of the file to Administrator, then any other user won't be able to access the file.
