Gary Gygax, who co-created the fantasy game Dungeons & Dragons and helped start the role-playing phenomenon, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva. He was 69.

And were suddenly silenced.

Must have failed to make his saving throw against Death Magic.

Gygax is survived by six children.

For a nerd he apparently knew how to get it on.  ;-)

Let's remember that Dave Arneson had a hand in it all too.

It is kind of sad, I mean 69 seems like a relatively early age at which to die these days.

My friends and I played a little in high school after we found an older brother's boxed up 70s D+D stuff.  We didn't last long since no one was ambitious enough to be DM and we kept running out of vodka.

My g/f STILL plays D&D.  (she's 37)
I often attempt to make fun of her for being a nerd, and it never quite gets very far considering my computer and video game fascination.

I used to own AD&D stuff as well as a kid.  I wish I would have saved those books.  Then I recently stumbled upon the entire collection in PDF format!  >:D

This saddens me as well.  Even though its technically past my age group I own a beginner D&D guide and love playing with a few of my friends.

Darn! I thought I felt a great disturbance in the force  :o This man is single handedly responsible for "using"most of my time when I was in university.

Always amazed me how every D&D game followed the plot of Lord of the Rings or some 80s fantasy movie or the latest Margaret Weiss book, though.

Shouldn't be too amazed.....D&D was actually loosely based on LOTR....so much so that there were a few lawsuits thrown TSRs way if memory serves....

They had to change the word Hobbit(tm) into halfling.

Yeah, but he didn't DIE.  So...shhhhhhhhhhhh.

or the latest Margaret Weiss book, though

Thats not surprising.  The entire Dragonlance series was done in collaboration with TSR and the links run from start to finish.

I did the D&D/AD&D thing in high school too. Used to get together with some friends once a week and played. Still have all my stuff (all the D&D rules, modules, the AD&D players and dungeon masters handbooks), packed away somewhere. Not sure why I've kept it, I haven't really had any interest in going back and using it.

I played Heroquest a few times. Does that count?

Sure.  I dont remember if they used the same stats and what not but the mechanics should be the same.  If you still have heroquest it goes for quite a bit on ebay so take care of it.

I know unfortunately. I had one that I bought myself when i was a kid. It was difficult to get enough people to play to make it worthwhile. Also, I had to commit to being Zargon, which means I can't ever play the hero characters again. Anyways, I sold my game in mint condition at a rummage sale for like $10 when I was 18 or so. The original board game isn't near as valuable as the add-on packs.

Having said that, if you liked Hero-quest then play the Buffy the Vampire Slayer board game. It is really fun, and has the same basic gameplay.

Just heard about his death.  :'(  I got a bunch of his stuff including his fiction books. His books about Gord do not follow the the LOTR style. Don't forget the old D&D TV show.
Or his queen of the drow adventures that inspired R.A. Salvsdor. Or his greyhawk campain. and so on...

Unfortunately i never got the game as a kid.  I wanted it definitely but being a kid in a toy store i was overwelmed with choices and well i never thought about it until i visited boardgamegeeks.  but then i got doom the board game and i think it is close enough for the price.

Does anyone know if he was still actively writing or did he retire and then die?

I still have Heroquest and all the miniatures, but I painted them all in high school to use in D&D. Didn't do a bad job, IMO.

He was working for TrollLord Games at the time and was still very actively writing and designing.

According to the D&D brand manager, the 4th ed. books will be dedicated to Gary.
