Title: Arcade LCDs any good?
Post by: Zobeid on March 01, 2008, 11:34:50 am
Has anyone tried using the arcade LCDs that Happ are selling now?  Just wondering if they are any good, how they compare with typical desktop LCDs.

I'm contemplating a cabinet with a rotating 19-inch LCD, and trying to decide whether to use a desktop LCD monitor with VESA mount or an industrial/arcade LCD with panel mounting.  There seem to be plusses and minuses either way. . .  but that is more of a cabinet design issue.

How looks these monitors with mame?.  Pixelated as normal PC LCD monitor, or looks like low res monitor, without pixelation in low res games.

These monitor don't need arcade vga, for real arcade look?

On my regular LCD monitor on my Mac, MAME looks great.  When I run it in full-screen mode, and it's using OpenGL scaling, everything gets fuzzy -- which it should, because that's much better than getting all pixelated and jaggy.

For example, the dots in Pac Man look like fuzzy dots. . .  not sharp-cornered squares.

It doesn't have all the scan lines and grain of a real arcade CRT, but I can live without that.  (I can especially live without that when playing vector games.)

Mame OSX run great in 2d games (but slow in 3d) in my macbook pro, but, in full screen looks blurry, this mame have very cool filters, than make looks a bit better.  The question is:  How look the happ arcade lcds in a real arcade. Blurry, Pixelated? A pics maybe useful for resolve this question.

Below 20 inch, there are no good LCD's. Period. No LCD manufacturer makes any, as the pixel-pitch limits image quality under 20 inch! So Happ cannot deliver a good one, and asks way to much money for a product that can't be good. Get a regular desktop one from the list I suggested in this topic:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=78985.0

At the moment, the only good panels (not to be confused with monitor brands/types) are the 20 inch S-IPS, 21.3 inch S-IPS or S-PVA, 23 inch S-IPS, 24 inch S-PVA, 27 inch S-PVA or 30 inch S-IPS or S-PVA's panels. S-IPS comes from LG/Philips and S-PVA comes from Samsung, but they are found in Dells, Apple's, Eizo's, Necs, La Cie's, Samsungs, even Acer has some. They ALL mention 178/178 (or 89/89 of axis) viewing degrees, which is the first thing to check. 170/170 viewing angles or less are nowhere near as good.

One last fun thing: Here in Holland, PC stores NEVER show 178/178 SPVA/SIPS displays as they are almost twice as expensive as TN-screens at least, and they make TN-images look like 100% crap. That will confuse costumers way too much. So good SIPS and SPVA can only be bought online here.
