If you have made a MAME cabinet, please submit it to this list I made:
http://mame-cabinet-archive.koenigs.dk/
This will help others to find some inspiration for making one too and make it easier to find a homepage for a specific cabinet.
Really hope you will submit your cabinet.
-
We already have a list here.
Look at the examples page from the main site.

I know, but it is so outdated and impossible to use. That's why I am making another and better database.

How about contributing to one of the two other database projects?
Either the wiki (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Examples), or this thread (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=72697.0).
-
I would like to do that :) Just don't know how to help.

Contirbute your cabinets to the database, that's how you help.

the problem with all of these lists is that there are no thumbnails...
-
Seriously....I couldn't agree more.
The wiki may be an out of the box thing, I don't know, I haven't messed with them. But this is a visual medium, who wants to go looking through a text link list of Mame machines. Bandwidth is not nearly the same problem today as it was of yesteryear, let's get a place with some thumbnails.
Koening your site is a great start, perfect way to showcase them. Do the images need to be that big, probably not quite, but it's the idea. Add some contextual tagging for searching and you have a great resource. Definitely not the wiki, that is about as user oriented as a kid working in McDonalds.
-
Not to disparage any of the hard work that went into putting together the BYOAC database and/or the Wiki, but I second the call for a more thumbnail oriented listing of cabinets.
It's really a shame that they aren't like that already, because I believe if they were, everyone's cabs would be getting the exposure they deserve, outside of the dedicated few who have the time to dig through a bunch of dead links.
As it is, I doubt very many people even dig through the text links at all.
One thing though, it would definitely be wise to try to tie any new database listing into BYOAC, since, time and again, third-party sites fall by the wayside and are rarely picked up and maintained by others. If it's part of THIS site, the community is more prone to keeping it fresh.
Can't we just improve the wiki or something?
-
Agreed, not to take away from the efforts of the Wiki, that was not my intention. Donated hard work went into that.
But a thread? If it makes sense to tie it to BYOAC, great, but the best format should be the top priority, and even in a better forum software than this, I can't see a thread making sense for this type of thing.
-
I may have missed it, but I haven't seen this one in any of the lists thus far. . .
http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/34709834/m/153000435831
To me, this is what it's all about: Classic arcade cabinet design. Clean construction. Professional-grade paint, finishing, custom artwork. Modern technology (U360s, LEDs, etc.). What's not to love?

Not to be all totalitarian about it, but I don't know if I like him posting there and not here ;D

Post back when you have a thousand projects in your database. So far you have five.
Then you will realize what a chore it is to actually maintain one of these databases, not just talk about it.
-
Something that I'd really like to see is a grouping of project threads by cabinet type. Say, all the Midway MK/Blitz style cab projects listed together, etc.

I think the only way to maintain a list so that it will remain useful for any reasonable length of time is by hosting the data yourself. A list dependent on links to other sites will become severely degraded in a hurry, websites disappear so often.
Also, I think "thousands of projects" is not a helpful goal. I'd rather see a list with 20, or maybe 50 at most, really nice projects, rather than try to collect every example of a cabinet that anybody has made around the world.

Crumudgeon,
You are right, the wiki could have thumbs on the index page...for example...just add the image with |70px to keep it small...something like this:???

Excellent!
-
I have decided to make my list, a list of the 10-20 best cabinets in each category, then I am not competing with BYOAC. And this way, it will be a huge inspiration for other builders.
So... if you think you have one of the best mame cabinet design, send me a link.
-
I tried something like this on the Project Announcements threads "Projects Index".
Thought it would be GREAT to have a simple index of cabinets with a single picture and a link to the project thread. People could flick through like a catalogue and click to the project they were interested in (as the link would stay current).
Didn't seem anyone (apart from two - thanks guys) were interested, and it rapidly failed.
If I were you, I would put something together yourself - find the cabs you like and post them yourself, I wouldn't bother asking people to post their cabs - it won't happen (at least in the way you hoped it would).
Good luck ...

I would left-justify the image (ie: to the left of the hyperlink), since the Text length varies from project to project and thus the images won't be vertically aligned, and maybe the pic could be a *tad* bigger (90px?)...but other than that your addition is perfect!
If you're cool with these changes I'll volunteer to start adding photos in my free time. ;D
EDIT: I was too excited, and I took the liberty to make some minor changes, inspired by your addition. I imagined adding a default "no image" pic for the projects without images, so that the column of thumbnails is even on the left-hand side.
Let me know what you think?
-
I love the pictures in the wiki!
When I first started on my cab, I tried using the text list, and didn't make it through too many.

Looks good to me. I only picked a small pic cause I wanted to see if it affected loading of the page, but it appears even at 90 that won't be a problem.
I like the no image pic, but I wish more wiki entries had pics on the site
FWIW, a two column table was suggested, so I put a sample of what that looks like in the wiki discussion page
http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Talk:Cocktail_cabinets
Seems like a good use of space to me, but then it would be hard to keep the list alphabetical
-
Easily I have the best cabinet. There is no reason to list anymore. I'm available for interviews to discuss this project.

Lew,
;D - You need your own wiki, just to keep track of your greatness.

I've joined your discussion in the Wiki forum. See you there.
