I have a PlayStation TO USB Converter like this one http://store.elementsource.com/bps2psxtopcu.html (http://store.elementsource.com/bps2psxtopcu.html)
It works fine on Mame but I can't get Mala to recognize it? I have to use the keyboard to select and start the game but it won't let me use the controls?
It shows that it's there when I select windows control panel and it's highlighted, I can also test it in the control panel but not on Mala?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does it show up as a Joystick?
Try enabling the joystick part in options

Yea I have it set to joystick, it works with another regular usb controller I have. Whatever controllers are hooked up to the computer you'll see them in the control panel to select which one you want to use (even my steering wheel works) and like I mentioned earlier the windows control panel recognizes it and it shows all of the buttons and directions work in the configuration but in the Mala controller test it doesn't register any button or direction what so ever. But after I select a game they work to play the games?
I was hoping if someone out there knows if you just can't use that kind of setup, or if so what to do about it and if it doesn't work with Mala if someone knows what frontend works with that kind of setup.

You already have your answer. Enable the joystick as a controller in MaLa.
Enjoy.

I came into this problem yesterday. What I did was go into the windows joystick calibration tool, and then under advanced, selected it as a joystick to use with older programs. Still showed greyed out controls in MaLa but worked just fine.

The same here. USB controllers worked at one point but no longer. I suspect installing another game or app since then might have broken Mala using usb controllers somehow.
Like you, the controller works under testing in windows and other games but not in Mala despite it being checked for use in the Mala GUI
