Title: Arcade Monitor Problem

Hello,

I have a dark area at the bottom of my arcade monitor (see the circled part in the picture below).  What is this?  Is this monitor burn-in?  Or would a cap kit fix it?

Disregard the display on the monitor...the game itself is totally screwed up and not working, and is in pretty rough shape...a good candidate for a mame conversion!

I don't see a picture. But in general always try a cap kit first to fix anything that won't adjust away with the little adjustment knobs.

There we go...it worked this time, and I didn't do anything different....oh well, blame it on Gremlins!

Anyway, is this burn in or something else?

Burn in manifests itself as a ghost image that you can see all the time.  That looks like something else. I would cap the thing first and if that doesn't fix it then I would go looking for a new tube (that could be a cap problem or a tube problem).

I'm not too sure a cap kit will fix that, and it doesn't look like traditional burn-in either.

To me it looks like a one of a couple of (unfixable) problems.

1) It may have been left too close to a large magnet or large power source. This would create a sort of "super-burn in" where all the electrons get pulled down into the corner and basically torch it.
2) The inside of the screen itself may be pealing up or flaking off.

I'm tempted to say it's the latter of the two judging by the shape of the mark. I notice it has a curve. Are the edges or the mark pretty well defined? (Picture a literal hole in the image.)

That's my best guess by looking at it. Of course, I am by no means an expert so don't take everything I say as gospel...

I have some similar black marks on my DD3 monitor.  My stuff was on the outside of the monitor and was due to it slowly burning the cardboard divider.  I just took a paint scraper (thin razor kind) and scraped it off.  I hope this helps.

If the picture tube hasn't had any rough handling then you should start with a cap kit.
