Title: Paint with special effects
Post by: Stormrider on February 26, 2008, 09:21:45 am
I'd like to use paint for my new CP, but I'd like something special, like a textured finish. I wonder if you have samples where I can see the results. Are these special paints durable for a surface that will be in contact with my hands? I've also considered some kind of laminate, but I'd like to round the borders of the top table and that is not compatible with laminates.

What I do for a textured finish is I use a foma roller to apply the coats of oil-based primer to the mdf.  Then I finish the paint job with spray enamel paint (usually a satin finish).  I fins this gives a nice textured look to the surface.  I'll post some pics if you like when I get home from work...

With a router courage and patience you can round the edges of laminate.  For the textured stuff the rock and marble spray paints are not bad.  Also if you use a latex pain over the primer then spritz water gently over the paint before it dries and immediately place a sheet or tarp over the paint and then take it off it gives a cool rain effect.  For my cp I am painting it piano black paint and putting a sheet of plexi over it.

On the coin door I'm restoring I'm using Rustoleum Hammered Satin Black finish paint.  A buddy of mine is a speaker builder and he uses this stuff to give a textured finish to the speaker housing that looks damned good.  It has the same roughness that a typical powder coat finish on coin doors usually have.

I know a guy who once painted a whole car in that Rustoleum hammered stuff.  Looks great on small items - looked like CRAP on a car.   :laugh2:

I've also used Rustoleum's Textured paint with good results. All of the carts and mobile bases that I weld for the shop get a coat. FYI, powder coat is actually smooth by default. There are only a limited number of colors that are available with a hammered or textured look...

And is it as durable as normal paint or should I expect the paint to fall or not grip well on edges, etc?

Not sure about durability as I just applied the paint this past weekend, but I will say that if you put a somewhat thick layer on it tends to lose some of its texture.
