Title: Do you think this is a decent TV for my cab?
Post by: shredso on February 24, 2008, 10:44:24 pm
I currently have my MAME cab setup in an old MKII cab that was converted from a Double Dragon.  I have my control panel done and I'm ready to build the rest of the cab.  I have the AVGA card running an old Wells Gardner.  It looks great for classic games but I'm thinking I may want something a little more sharp.  I've also had some resolution issues which is irritating.  My brother is running a Sony Wega (outside a cab) with S-Video and thinks it looks great.  I found this TV pretty cheap on craigslist

Am I crazy for considering going from an actual monitor to a TV?  If anything goes wrong with the monitor I'm pretty much screwed, but if something goes wrong with the TV, I can always toss in another cheapy.  The monitor does look a bit dull, I imagine it's only a matter of time before it dies.  I want to decide soon because the mounting will be completely different.  Thanks.

Ed.

Yes I think you're crazy.  :P
Sounds like your arcade monitor just needs a cap kit (or may soon).  If you aren't comfortable with doing it, take it to any TV shop.  Same if it dies.  It's not like they are much different than repairing TVs.

S-video on a tv is definitely a step down from arcadevga/arcade monitor.

Now, there are models of TV's out in the 20"-27" size that have component inputs. I have seen a few examples of good results with that.

Thanks.  I think you've veered me toward a cap kit.  Hopefully I don't electrocute myself!  I did some reading on discharging the monitor, it doesn't look too difficult.  I'm assuming if I do some more searching on this site there is a tutorial on how to change the capacitors, or is it just a basic remove and replace?
