Hi guys and dolls,
Starting my first mame and cp and was after some help on the wiring of the keywiz. Looked at the Keywiz site and throught the wiki but am still abit confused about how to wire it up. Done the daisy chain for the GRD but how do i allocate each push button and P1/P2 Coin, Credit etc.... to the buttons...am i way over my head if i don't understand this or basic electronics??
-
Each button has a ground wire to it..... and a live wire which connects to one of the inputs on the keywiz. When you close a switch by pressing a button it shorts that input to ground, and the keywiz sees that button as being pressed.
The information that came with your keywix is pretty self explanitory... The attached diagram shows three button switches and three inputs to the keywiz are at the left hand side.
Also.... These are the connections I made on mine.... IE which buttons should go to which inputs. But do check this against the sheet Randy sent you with your keywiz as I think the ground connection positions may have changed. and some connection positions that were grounds are now reserved.
This list applies to the Keywiz Eco No Solder version.... The Keywiz Max has the +5V connection as a solderable position instead. You didn't say which version of Keywiz you have..
1. +5V
2. GROUND
3. GROUND
4. GROUND
5. P1 BUTTON 1

I think i must be in one world of pain then....can you explain then what the letters A-P and 1-8 are for. Do you just connect buttons to any of these and allocate what they do in mame.??
Sorry for dumb questions.... ???

NO! there is a default setup that will be recognised by mame. Which version of the keywiz do you have???

OK! Give me a few mins I'll track down exactly what you need to know.

OK here are the default mame keys..... On the left is the function in Mame and on the right is the keyboard key that relates to it:
COIN 1 5
COIN 2 6
Player 1 RIGHT R arrow
1 LEFT L arrow
1 UP U arrow
1 DOWN D arrow
1 SW 1 L-ctrl
1 SW 2 L-alt
1 SW 3 space
1 SW 4 L-shift
1 SW 5 Z
1 SW 6 X
1 SW 7 C
1 SW 8 V
START Player 1 1
START Player 2 2
Player 2 RIGHT G
2 LEFT D
2 UP R
2 DOWN F
2 SW 1 A
2 SW 2 S
2 SW 3 Q
2 SW 4 W
2 SW 5 I
2 SW 6 K
2 SW 7 J
2 SW 8 L
NOW! Compare this list to the diagram of the Keywiz Max that I attached below... and you will be able to see exactly which button goes to which input.
The shazaaam key obviously connects to the one labled shazaaam, if you are using it. And your service buttons (again if you are using them) connect to the ones marked: Enter, Tab, Esc, and finally P is the pause key if you want one.
Hope that helps!

dude...ur the bomb :applaud: where did you find this info...
and on my copy there are two maps for the keywiz...whats the other for...
SW1,2,3,etc....these stand for the push buttons?? i have 6 so i guess i would only need to use that amount.
Can i use Coin 1 and 2 as just 5? or do i have to use them seperatley...i have also added a escape key to get back into the frontend...where would this fit in

Lurking on my HD and some of it from memory....

The other map is the default setting for the programable keyset... You program it using the Keywiz Uploader software and then you can access your own custom keyset, by holding down the shazaaam key and pushing left on the player one joystick. The custom keyset is then active instead of the default Mame keyset. To get back to the default mame keyset you hold down the shazaaam key and push right on player one joystick.

Yes, and Yes...

You will need them to be separate, some games expect to see separate coin inputs for each player.
i have also added a escape key to get back into the frontend...where would this fit in
Connect it to the connection marked "Esc" on the keywiz diagram.

No Problemo!!
Glad to help....... Next time you hit a brick wall, asking on here before panic sets in is a good idea. None of this stuff is as difficult as it first seems and even the complex electronics that come later on (especially with restoration of original machines) is still not as complex as it seems right now.
There's always somebody on here that will help you out when you get stuck.

Ok, this seems like a good place to ask:
What is the difference between Randy's SHAZAAM! and Andy's Shift? Are they just different names for the same thing, or does Shazzam act differently?

They're similar but not quite the same........ The Shazaaam Key is a dedicated shift key and keyset switching key. Whereas the Ipac uses an exisiting input key to act as the shift key. The downside to the Ipac method is that it can conflict with other key strokes and change their function when you didn't intend to. It's quite unlikely that would happen, but it is possible.

OK, I get it. I actually am setting up my minipac to have the shift key be dedicated (as opposed to being player one start, due to the potential of a conflict)
Fozzy: it is odd tho.. I am a "yank" who prefers Andy's wares (or is it Andy Warne's??? ;)) And you are a briton who prefers cheeseburger inhaling, Randy "Guy who likes the Sega Game gear" Travis.... ;)
I appologize ahead fo time for the "Randy Travis" joke and the Game Gear joke; as I was an owner of a sega gamegear and even had the TV adapter for it. (Should have never let that one slip through my fingers!)
Also: Fozzy; never heard back on how to DL Zero Punctuation vids from you....

One last thing Fozzy, i noticed on some of the threads that some people have a keyboard under the cp. Is this necessary?
Does that mean i could change my cp...as i currently have only one coin and one esc button could i change the esc button to coin for player two and use esc on the keyboard to exit games....
Thanx man
-
You could definitely do that if you don't mind being that reliant on a keyboard. I think most people like to limit keyboard use to rare administrative kind of stuff though, assuming the control panel is for a cabinet and not for a desktop system.
-
Cool..i guess i'll make do without a keyboard..
so do many games rely on their being a two player credit button then?
-
Typically the games where multiple people play simultaneously will have 1 coin slot per player. Games where players alternate turns make no distinction between the coin slots. There are probably exceptions though. I think Rampage is an exception if I recall.

Yeah! Rampage, Gauntlet, and I can think of about five or so others off the top of my head, so there are probably quite a few.... some of the fighters use separate coin inputs too. As do things like several Neo-Geo MVS games.
As for needing a keyboard or not.... debatable point!! I have a keyboard, mostly because it means that I don't have to have lots of admin buttons on the panel. You will need access to things like the TAB key which is used in Mame to get to the options menu and dip settings for games.
It's also very useful to have a keyboard connected when your are setting or altering the software setup of your cab or altering options and setups in windows. You're going to do this much more often than you may think.
It's easy enough to connect a keyboard to the Keywiz. So you should have no problem with that. Plus a keyboard is a really cheap thing to add in there, but will save you a lot of grief later on.

Ok...wow...keyboard it is...man...how many times do you change your mind while building this thing...gezzzzzz...
That way at least i will get my two coin slots...i guess i should drill an extra hole for the esc button to add to my panel yeah? Save me opening a drawer to push esc everytime on the keyboard.
Double DRagon is another one guys...only needs one coin slot, even thought my one has two, you don't need to put it into player two coin slot for player two to use the credits. And considering i want to play games like the MK series and have Street Fighter fo those that play it, im gonna guess i will need it for them.
Thanx again

Actually I meant that while Rampage has 3 players playing simultaneously, it has a single credit pool, rather than individual ones. Sort of a strange choice. I don't know how many exceptions like that there are.
