I've been using Mgalaxy as my frontend and have had no problems downloading the ROMS into the ROM folders. The games come up easily with Mgalaxy. But now with CHD's where do they go??? I tryed putting them in the ROM folder and they do not come up when Mgalaxy is booted up.
Thanks for any info!!!

The chds go in subfolders of the rom folder. Instead of repeating the MameFAQ, I'll just link to your question (http://mamedev.org/devwiki/index.php/FAQ:Setting_Up#Where_do_I_place_the_.CHD_.28compressed_hard_disk_image.29_files.3F).

Well I learned that you need the roms and chds in the same folder for it to work...so, for example
C:\Mame\Roms\area51\
this will contain area51.chd
and all other rom files

Only true if you unzip the roms. (Hmm, unless that is an Mgalaxy bug. MXb0x3r?)
Just leave them zipped; it's faster, less disk space, and easier to manage. For your example:
C;\Mame\Roms\area51.zip <--- roms
C:\Mame\Roms\area51\area51.chd <--- chd
Where the bold text should match if you want different games.
(Dang, I was too lazy to write that the first time, but still had too.)

Can i latch on by asking if all roms require CHD's to work?

No, CHD's are the hard drives of some of the newer machines (year 2000 and up?) and are required for their roms to work.

NO..... CHD's are compressed hard drive images, from games that had a hard drive containing things like the game program and graphics and sounds etc etc.
Not all games had a hard drive in them. Many had all of their program solely contained in the ROM's
However, if you are trying to run a game that had a hard drive in the original arcade machine then you must have the ROM's and The CHD.
The downside to all of this is that, not many of the CHD games run well or at least not at full speed inside of MAME and many of them don't run at all.

Thanks guys....one last enquiry....i guess you will know which ones need CHD's by
1) being Year 2000 or over on date and
2) being Year 2000 or over in date that don't work??

Not really. You just need to take a quick look online and see what games are CHD games.
Not all CHD games are 2000+ and not all 2000+ games are CHD. Also, not all 2000+ games don't work because they are CHD games, but might simply not work yet. It's just not that cut and dry.
