Title: Newbie needs help with front ends
Post by: steve_pss on May 20, 2003, 10:49:51 am
Hey gang. 1st off, this is truly incredible site.. VERY grateful it exists!!

I'm finally building my own cabiniet (actually a barcab) from scrtach and I would like to use a front end so I have a better look and dont need the keys and mouse. i tried to dowload and play around with some last night with NO luck at all.

This is a stupid question, but is this due to me running mame32 rather than mameDOS? I run XP so i'm not sure if i can even run a DOS version.

Please help, any suggestions pointers will be appreciated.

Mame32 already has a front end built in and is not meant to be run with another front end.  You want the win32 version of mame which is meant to run from a command line to use with win xp.  Use a windows based front end and you will have no problem with win32 under XP.

No, the dos version you won't be able to run.  however, you'd then want Windows command line version of MAME.

Your dealing with real noob here. What version can i d/l that will run on XO and allow me to use a standard front end like emulax?

Are there any front ends that work with mame32?

Yes some FE's work fine with MAME32, but mainly Windozy ones...I *think* Emulaxian works with MAME32 tho ( )p( ? )

A lot of the non-Windows looking FE's featured on this site do not support MAME32, so it is worth your while grabbing the Windows commandline version from MAME.NET.

I suggest taking a look at www.mameworld.net/easyemu/ for some beginners help using commandline MAME.  Beware tho, I think Windows Commandline MAME is referred to as 'Win32 MAME' in some places on that site - note this is not the same as 'MAME32'.

MAMEWAH does not support MAME32, I'm sure the other FE authors here will confirm if theirs do...

post from your cfg\emulators\femame.cfg
emupath||, gamepath||, workingdir|| and mame||
then i can see what is wrong as only these options are nescessary for running mame

it will work with mame32 but as mame32 won't use mame ini files to setup rompaths you will have to point gamepath|| to your romsfolder...but as every fe author I allways suggest using the normal windows commandline version because running mame32 from the commandline will ignore the settings made inside the mam32 gui and that can result in confusion...

thanks very much. I will post that soon ASAP (at work now).

If anyone has a standard file (setup to standard mame paths) please post so I can "stare and compare"

you just have to point and click to them in the internal  cfg utiltiy...but for your info...mine would be:
emupath|c:\emu\emuarc\mame\|
gamepath|c:\emu\emuarc\mame\roms\|
workingdir|c:\emu\emuarc\mame\|
mame|mamepp.exe|
