Title: Can drivers for arcadevga version 2 be installed with computer monitor attached?
Post by: m_mcgover on February 18, 2008, 10:10:08 am
This is my first mame cabinet setup and I am having problems installing my Arcadevga version 2 card (red one).  Here is what I did:

1) I built my PC & installed Windows XP with another video card (ATI) present.
2) I uninstalled the display drivers in the device manager, and ran the utility to remove the old ATI drivers before shutting down
3) shut down PC and swapped in the arcade vga2 card and connected my CRT computer monitor to the card's dvi output with the supplied dvi-to-25pin adapter.
4) restarted PC and tried to install the Arcade VGA 2 drivers from the CD, but XP complains that the drivers are incompatible with the card.

I've done some searching and have seen others needed to have the card connected to the Arcade monitor to install the drivers, but that was for the Arcade vga version 1.  Do I need to do the same for the Arcade vga 2?

Any help or guidance is appreciated.

Thanks!

I just installed on my first cab too and you do not need an arcade monitor hook up to install the driver, what you have to do is force install the driver in safemode, go to ultimarc and follow the installation instructions.

You can still continue to install the driver if the message appeared, I believed that the message give you the option to continue installing the driver, that's what I selected and everything works fine.

Hopes that help.

Tony, Thanks for the response.  I'll try that again.  I tried many variations over the weekend and I am pretty sure that was one of them....but, I'll give it another shot.  I was not very methodical with the different variations I tried, so perhaps it did not work because of other issues I worked out.  I am pretty sure I did not have the option to continue installing the driver once I got the error message.

OK.  So the message I get trying to install in safe mode is:
INF Error
Video driver not found.
After hitting OK, I get a dialog box that says something to the effect of try installing standard video driver first.

But, I thought I did that when I had the old card in?

People seem to have a lot of trouble installing the ArcadeVGA drivers when the system has had another ATI card installed in it due to driver conflicts.  For my cab's PC, I have a cheap Nvidia TNT2 card that I use when I need to hook it up to a normal PC monitor.  That way, I never experience conflicts between the drivers and the ArcadeVGA drivers.

When they say "standard video driver", they're talking about the generic 16-color VGA driver that windows uses when it cannot find the driver for your card.
