Title: Laminate questions
Post by: shmokes on May 19, 2003, 07:06:24 pm
Three questions regarding laminate:

1- If I'm laminating over melamine will the laminate stick fine with no prep or should I sand down the melamine finish to make it rougher?

2- I have a sheet of plywood that I'm planning to use for the control panel.  One side has been smoothed and the other is rough and raw.  Is one side preferable for laminating?

3- Again on that plywood from question 2, are both sides fine for laminating in case I decide to laminate both to avoid warping since they will be on a hinge and not screwed to a frame?

Thanks.

you can use laminate over melamine(I did before).
Pour contact cement on both side, use a fine roller then wait like atleast 20 min so both sides kinda dries then put em together.

yeah you should laminte the smooth side of plywood.for some weird reason, laminte sticks better with particle board or MDF.I laminated all ply, mdf, particle and best result was with mdf and particle.nothing wrong with ply wood, its just you gotta get the smooth furniture grade ply wood.if its cheapo ply wood then sand.

I say laminate both sides.you gonna build a panel then do it RIGHT !  ;D (I would go for both sides).

Thanks...I was leaning toward laminating both sides, but will the fact that one side is really rough cause any problems with the laminate adhering?  And when you laminated your melamine did you laminate as is, or did you do any prep to the surface first like sanding?

well,sand the "roughness"
Yeah laminte tend the peel off easy when used on chepo plywood thats way too rough(there is that kind of plywood I hate).
as for laminating over melamine,no I didnt sand anything.
as is !  :)
it sticks really well but remember to wait like 20 min(atleast) before you put em together.
Of course get contact cement instead of that crappy adhesive home depot carries. You will find those adhesive in the same section as laminate but dont buy those(contact cement is much better).  :)
