Title: Cocktail feet mounting, your help please.
Post by: Franco B on February 12, 2008, 03:51:45 pm
Im getting to the stage in my project where I want to mount the cocktail table feet to the base of the cabinet but im struggeling as how best to mount the feet.

This is the current state of the build:

These are the feet that I have made for it:

From this next picture you can see that the cab sides will hinge at the bottom so the  inside can be accessed:

The problem I am having is that I want the feet to be at the very ends of the cab but I also want the sides of the cab to reach to the bottom of the cabinet but I don't think I can have both at the same time. As far as I can see I have the two options available:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v325/Francoberasi/footdilema.jpg)

Green = Side panel
Light Blue/Green = Base
Red = Hinge

A) Side panel goes all the way to the bottom but feet must be under the table for the side to be able to pivot.

B) Feet are at the end of the table but the base section is 'proud'

Any ideas where I how I can get the best of both worlds?

Get the full overlay Euro style hinges.  Then attach your feet to one edge of a piece of 1/4"x3" Flat Aluminum.   Place it so that the foot edge is flush with your door and attach the other side to the base of your cabinet.  You will still have a 1/4" piece showing, but it is diminished greatly.  The other thing you can do is to install the plate 1/4" inboard to hide the entire plate.  Be sure to bolt this assembly together.  Screws will pop out.  There are other ways, but they get pretty involved.  This seems to be the simplest one.

I don't have time to draw something, but if you want, let me know & I can post something later.

Good luck!

I agree.
Use overlay hinges like your kitchen cupboards.
Don't use a piano hinge. Overlay hinges will fold the panel out from the cabinet, not down if you know what I mean.
Then you can mount your feet as close to the edge as you want.

But that still doesn't solve the problem of what he should mount the feet to. If, like his diagram shows, the legs are approximately the same width as the opening panel, he will need some sort of angle bracket to mount the legs to the bottom panel of the bracket. Depending on where the weight of the cabinet is dispersed, this may not work well.

See the modified Option A attached.

Here is the detail that I was advocating.  It will allow you to do more of what you want.  The more you recess the plate under the door, the less visible it is.  But then your legs go in farther too.  You will want to leave a slight gap, usually about 1/8" between the door and the plate to allow it  to swing.

I hope this clears things up!

Thanks for your help guys  :cheers:

I thought cabinet hinges would be the key but I couldn't find any in B&Q for some reason.

ArtsNFartsNCrafts, the monitor mounting was one of the parts that I was struggling with when planning the cab but the solution I came up with works well, Ill take some photos for you when I get home from work this afternoon.

Thanks again  :)

Thanks again for your help.

I picked up some of those hinges and they work wonders :)

My only criticism is that the holes for the screws are slightly too small if you want to use some wider screws, they are made out of aluminium though and so are easy to open out.
