Title: spinner knob options?
Post by: TheShanMan on February 10, 2008, 01:17:36 am
I've got an old spinner control I bought from some local shop a long time ago (don't remember what game it came out of) but it has a crappy knob on it. What are my options for nice knobs? I see the TokenTop from GGG, which looks really cool. I see Ultimarc has a SpinTrak spinner, but I don't actually see it in the store and don't know if they sell the knobs separately (it says the knobs are slikstik - is that why I don't find this in the store???). What about other options?

There are quite a few options. I think nearly everyone sells knobs separately. Thereis a guy on Ebay that sells just regular stereo knobs that might works very well if you want something a bit different. But  First you need to look at the spinner and see what type of mount it expects. Does the spinner shaft have a D shape, or is it a smooth shaft meant to use a set screw?  What is the diameter of the shaft?

You can also make your own spinner. The one on my arcade is made from a 2 inch diameter acrylic rod, but the method used to fabricate it could be used with almost any material if you you have the right tools to work with.

The shaft is sort of a D shape - it actually has 2 flat sides, which are adjacent to each other, but my knob has a set screw, so I guess that means my spinner should be fairly compatible with whatever kind of knobs are available, assuming the shaft diameter is correct. I'll have to measure it.

I'd like to know what those "quite a few options" are. :) I'm not necessarily looking for something "a bit different" - something more along the lines of "tried and true", "pleasing to the eye", and "good functionally".

Ultimarc still sells the SpinTrak.  I bought one a couple of weeks ago and go the skirted blue knob from them.  Send Andy an e-mail and ask if he has any knobs for sale.

I bought the Turbo Twist 2 from GroovyGameGear.com and upgraded to the token knob in one shot.  When I received the spinner it already had the token knob installed but still came with the normal "black" one.

Assuming it fits your spinner you are welcome to have it for free.  It's brand new and still in the plastic package.

Here's the knob and how it looks: (under knob style - stylish black)

PM me if you still need it.

Could go original and build a custom knob, or get a nice one machined from aluminium.
