howdy...
i'm sure this has been asked before...but i couldn't find it with the search...so...
in many cases there are multiple versions of the same game...how do i prevent mala from showing all of them...?
how do i know which version is the 'best' one that i should be using...?
is there an easy way to delete the roms of the versions i definitely won't be using...?
for example...
Street Fighter II - The World Warrior (World 910522)
Street Fighter II - The World Warrior (World 910214)
Street Fighter II - The World Warrior (US 910206)
Street Fighter II - The World Warrior (US 910214)
Street Fighter II - The World Warrior (US 910318)
Street Fighter II - The World Warrior (US 910228)
Street Fighter II - The World Warrior (US 910411)
Street Fighter II - The World Warrior (US 910522)
Street Fighter II - The World Warrior (US 911101)
Street Fighter II - The World Warrior (Japan 911210)
Street Fighter II - The World Warrior (Japan 910214)
Street Fighter II - The World Warrior (Japan 910306)
i'd assume i'd be using one of the us versions...but which one...?
or...
Joust (White/Green label)
Joust (Solid Red label)
Joust (White/Red label)
which is the 'correct' version of joust i should be using...?
or...
Shinobi (set 5, System 16A, unprotected)
Shinobi (set 1, System 16A, FD1094 317-0050)
which of these two versions of shinobi is the 'right' one...?
thanks for the help...!

I don't know about Street Fighter, but on Joust, the different revisions fixed some stuff. For one, the pterodactyl bug that let you kill him by standing in the middle of the lower floating platform was fixed (in the revision, you could only do that on the start of a pterodactyl wave). I don't know which rom is which though, without looking it up. I guess choosing which one would be up to you, whether you want to be able to use that bug or not ;)

thanks for the info...
any ideas on how to prevent mala from displaying all versions...?

in mame32 its as simple as ticking the 'clones' box in the custom filters setting. mala will have something like that

The checkbox is "Only masters" - see attachment.
You need to blat your "All Games" list and generate again. Some have reported problems with that checkbox not sticking when you tell it to. If it doesn't work for you, rename your "mala.ini" file as a backup, load MaLa again and generate a new gamelist, then swap your mala.ini file back and you should be okay.
NB - "Masters" is not always going to be the one you want; there's no real way to know for sure. eg. Pole Position will be the Japanese version, Pac-man will be Puck Man, Choplifter won't be the bootleg that is actually playable. But it's a start. I start with all masters, then hand-pick better versions to add into my gamelists as I discover something wrong with the master version. As long as I don't know I'm missing out on some crucial bug-fix though, I don't worry about it!

awesome...!
thanks a bunch...

i spoke to soon...
i have yet to be successful with keeping the 'only masters' box checked...
i deleted the all games list files and tried anew...i even renamed my ini file and genereated a new one to no avail...
do i have to be using mame32...?

The majority of games it wont matter which version you pick, but for a lot of the capcom fighting games theres minor differences about.
For example Marvel Super Heroes vs Street fighter has a character named Norimaro that is only in the Japanese rom.
Theres a few differences between the Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo versions... The US version has significantly more difficult AI (which is already stupid hard in the other versions) In the Japanese Version theres a few things like Zangiefs neutral jumping Fierce is an Auto-Dizzy. etc.
Theres only 1-2 games that have major changes between versions and I can't even name any of them off the top of my head.

I've been spending a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time trying to find out what the differences are between each revision, but unlike the Mortal Kombat games, the differences in the SF games aren't documented anywhere. I'm sure the programmers at Capcom know what the differences are between each version, but I haven't seen it listed anywhere. :(

If you poke around on the forums at http://www.shoryuken.com (http://www.shoryuken.com) You can find a lot of the differences listed. And even if there aren't complete lists of the differences, You can find which version is the accepted one for Tourney play

Well... naturally you use the one that matches your game board.
;) >:D

i have yet to be successful with keeping the 'only masters' box checked...
Forget checking the box. Quit out of Mala and edit the Mala.ini file. Change Master=0 to Master=1. Save it and restart Mala. Refresh the main game list. The check box will still not be checked, but you'll notice the main game list is only showing the masters after the refresh.
