Title: Volume Control (Potentiometer) How to Wire one up.
Post by: Games001 on February 07, 2008, 01:33:02 pm
As I was unable to find any 'how to wire..' help with any ease, here it is for those that might ask how it's done and how to wire up that first time volume control.

Be sure to leave ample wire in your setup for the knob to not only reach your cab wall, CP or where ever you are installing it, but also to give you lots of room to repair or replace burnt out parts.

The potentiometer works like a volume control on a radio.
1.   Simply ground one of the outer pins (usually left tab if the 'rod' is facing you).
2.   The other outer pin goes to output
3.   and the center pin to the input.

NOTE: The direction of the knob ‘turn’ is the direction you should set the output wire.  Input on center tab and Output on right tab will result in volume increase on a clockwise turn, decrease on a counter-clockwise turn.

I would like to see this sticky'd at some point after discussion. Come up with a standard part # for a potentiometer and the method (for example PC audio jack as source). Others will need this info.

There are probably a thousand viable audio potentiometers in production around the world and a few million OoP sitting in warehouses and shops. Specifing one part number is only going to cause people to run around looking for a pot and spending too much money where a much cheaper/readily available pot will work equally well. Might be better to describe a pot with standard characteristics.

Just something to keep in mind.

Very good point.

Also, the pot above will only work for a mono setup. For PC speaker setup, there will be two rows, one for left and one for right.
