Title: Shortest Buttons?
Post by: Bender on February 07, 2008, 12:08:35 am
Anybody know if there are push buttons made that are full size from the top but the housing is only 3/4 or less deep or does anybody have any ideas on how to make one

I'm building a cab with a rotating control panel and I want to have a couple of pinball buttons on the sides but I only have the 3/4 width of the side of the cab (anything longer would prevent the cp from rotating)

thanks!

check out the "light blue buttons" thread:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=75445.0

and scroll down a bit to the sanwa buttons, there is a pic for buttons that arent very "deep", but they are meant for mounting in a metal control panel, so you may need to mod them.

Edited: No link for getting sanwa buttons, Im sure someone here can help you, or you can google.

i would have to guess 25 - 35 mm or so. They are about as thin as you are going to get.

I found these but they have a minimum order of 960 :banghead:
I only need like 4 or 6
these would work especially if I bent the contacts down
they may only be 13mm deep
I'll keep lookin'

I still think there may be a way to make some too

Take a happ button, remove the spring, and cut it down to near the ring. Super glue in a leaf spring and jerry rig a happs style switch in there... Most of a Happs (or similar) button is shaft and spring... If you are willing to sacrafice a button, im sure you will find a way to make them really short. There is a limit tho, you need some level of decernable travel for the button...

Bender - go check out http://www.lizardlick.com (http://www.lizardlick.com)

They have a great selection of Sanwa and Seimitsu parts, and ship super fast.  I've ordered a ton of parts from them.

The sanwa buttons aren't going to be as thin as that button you linked because they have external microswitches (that are a lot nicer than the ones on that button)  I can't find a tape/ruler anywhere handy, but the sanwa screw-in i have in front of me is probably just a touch over 1" tall, going from top to bottom of the terminals.

If i'm understanding your clearance issue correctly, I think you could make the sanwas work if you got screw ins.  Route out a hole a little larger than the button and mount it inside the hole
