Title: toshiba portege s100 bricked
Post by: Kangum on February 05, 2008, 10:57:54 pm
acouple weeks ago i go to pick up my toshiba portege and the battery falls out. im thinking no big deal soft landing on the carpet. I pick the battery up put it back in and when i go to turn in on the entire laptop is totally messed. what the heck. when i turn it on the entire screen is filled with

a'a'a'a'a'a'a''a'a'a'a'a'a'a'a'a'a'a'a'a

so i changed batterys. same thing. change memory. same thing. change hard drive. same thing. no battery at all just power plug. same thing. whole screen just fills with A' at the bios screen. i cant see anything.

the laptop itself wasnt dropped. if anyone can help me to what may have happened id appreciate it. atm it seems bricked. the battery comming out while in standby somehow really fubar it up.

im not sure because im not sure what that means. i do think its bios related though because even though i couldnt see i did boot into xp safe mode once and all was fine as far as the screen was. it only seems to affect the boot sequence.

where or what would i check. i looked in the online manual pdf and didnt see anything.

i dunno about laptops bios resetting, but in desktops you would remove the little CMOS Battery (2032 disk like battery) or there would be a little jumper you would bridge.

Some things to try:

Leave it unplugged without the battery for a few hours.  then try plugging it in and booting.

See if you can get into the Bios.  Try saving and exiting  followed by returning to defaults. (if that doesn't work)

Boot from a floppy or Bootable CD.  (also might remove HD and try this)

If you can get into safe mode you can try a defrag, cleanup, virus scan(possibly) and you have access to the recovery console through the XP disk.

Good luck.

im pretty sure it died a horrible death at this point. it went under the knife completely dissasembled looking for a bios battery to remove. good luck to me getting it back together. ive fought with this problem for so long now im starting not to care anymore. it will likely end up for sale for parts

ouch.. well... you dont exactly need to put EVERY screw back...   ::)  have you looked up a disassembly guide for your laptop so you can backtrack it?
