Title: TV Problems - Svideo to composite nightmare!
Post by: lycrake on January 31, 2008, 06:51:44 pm
Hi there guys

Building a cocktail cabinet atm which I will document as a blog in the near future.

My cabinet is built but im having a few problems.

The TV i've got is an old Hitachi 25" thing

I've got an ATI Radeon 7000 with an s video out outputting composite into a scart block and I don't get any picture. I literally get a black screen with a few white lines.

Now i've tried different cables, different blocks and changed loads of settings on the video card (PAL/NTSC difference Hz etc) and I still don't get a picture.

I then read that some TVs wont detect a svideo input so you have to mod the cable using a 470 pf capacitor. I've done this and it STILL doesn't work. I know the cable i've soldered works as it works on another TV.

Now amongst all this tinkering I decided to plug in my SCART selector box and hey presto I get a perfect picture!!! I have an s video to composite lead which goes into this and then from this I have a scart to scart lead to the back of the TV!?

Whats in this box that makes it work!? It works even if I don't have it plugged into the power!?

Any ideas? My solution at this stage is to just keep the box in my cabinet!!!

Ideally, you should go from the video card's VGA output directly to the SCART input of the TV since you're lucky enough to have it.  Your TV will basically become an arcade monitor if you do that, without degrading the picture by going through the S-Video out of your video card.  Search the forums here and google for "VGA to SCART".

Seems like I've told the SCART story about 10 times already in different threads here.

Why not try a search ?

Maybe I should make "the definite SCART guide to arcade gamers"......

As well, the wiki seems either a bit disregarded or unknown to many newcomers lately. There are a lot of things to look at above and it doesn't stand out.

I did do a search, but it didn't reveal any definate solutions that I hadn't tried all ready.

Im still unsure why the composite hack didnt work. The next thing is to to an LCD to SCART lead.

Leaving the scart switcher box in isn't ideal, as its currently in use, takes up a lot of room, and its serious over kill considering a small lead should do the job!

s-video was supposed to supply seperate luma/ chroma signals direct .

but, many tv mfgrs went cheap and simply tied them together at the jack .
which,  is the same as composite.

see   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-Video  for a pic should u wish to make ur own s-vid to rca adapter..
