Title: Where would I find this thing...
Post by: elsie on January 29, 2008, 09:26:21 am
Ok, hopefully someone out there will know what I am talking about.

I want to install some items like the power switch, HDMI switch, etc out of view and out of reach of the kids.  So I am thinking that I'd like to install them on a hinged piece of wood behind the marquee that tilts down to reveal the controls.  The type of mechanism that I am looking for is similar to the sunglasses holder that I have in my car.  It closes flush with the ceiling of the car, I push up on it and some sort of spring loaded clasp releases, and the compartment slowly opens.  To close it I just push it shut, and the spring clasp latches it closed.  So, does anyone know where I would get this type of clasp, and what type of hinge or other mechanism would I use to allow it to open slowly rather than just dropping open with a thud.

Thanks

First thought would be to go to a junkyard and pull one from a car.  That would be inexpensive, too.

I'd look anywhere that sells woodworking supplies to people who build kitchen cabinets: Rockler, Woodcraft, Woodworker's Hardware, etc. Start with Woodworkers Hardware and look in the "Lid Stays and Supports" category...
