I realized the other day that despite all of the time I spent coming up with a name and designing artwork I still refer to mine as "The MAME Cabinet." I wondered if I was the only one.
-
Mine is generally referred to as 'The Arcade Beast'!
-
Depends on who I am talking to usually. If they are not familiar with mame I say "arcade" if they are I say "mame machine or cab" . With my family I usually say "the cabinet"
Xam

"The Arcade Project That Will Be Finished Someday"
why do I get the feeling that option was put in just for me ;D
-
I usually say my "arcade machine" if I'm talking generically but since I have more than one sometimes I refer to them as the "cocktail table" or "the pink one" or "the new one" depending on the context of the conversation.
-
I call mine the mame cabinet as well

Where's the option for "Arcade Cabinet"?
-
Mines just referred to as "The Cab"....
GF calls it something else though....
;D

Mame machine, arcade machine, or arcade cabinet (cab). Never "the arcade." That's the room they're in. :)

Exactly, I never ever heard that expression until I started reading these forums. An "arcade" is where you go to play games (before video games they even had penny arcades).

Definately "The Arcade" oh and Hi..Im new to the message board. Active visitor to this site for 5+ years.
-
my cab or arcade cabinet.
-
I call it my "All in One" because I have other dedicated machines.

Same here. I still stumble over it when people say that when they're specifically referring to one cabinet. In fact, where I work, we actually have a long unused room we call the, "Arcade," because of the cathedral-like arches.
As for me, It depends entirely on the context of the conversation and who I'm talking to. Generally it's, "my arcade cabinet(s)." My GF calls it, "that crap." To which I generally respond, "it's not just that crap! It's my crap and keep your hands off of it!"
-
We called it the Arcade Machine or MAME Machine for a long time. Once I added some others we started calling it the MAME Cab. Interesting how the names evolve.
-
Mine gets referred to as "You're playing with that bloody machine again aren't you!" :-[ >:D >:D
..... and More Cowbell, Christopher Walken is Weird!!

its empty at the moment since i brought home somebody elses project, and i'm bringing home another empty cab this weekend, but i just refer to the one i have as the arcade game. The one i'm bringing home this weekend i just refer to as "the carnival" since its an empty one.
-
i call my cab an arcade machine but my mates call it a console or gaming machine both annoy me a little especially when I'm not a fan of gaming machine (fruit machines) :dunno

I listed that one since it's a pet peeve of mine. I'm OK with using "Arcade" as an adjective, but if you're using it as a noun you should be referring to a location.

Funny topic this, as I have now seen since the dawn of the internet that our friends across the pond use slightly different terms to us in England.
All I know from growing up was that to everyone I knew and all the magazines' references always called them 'an arcade machine', and is how I continue to refer to them. What's strange is back in the day everyone who heard this knew what you were talking about instantly. These days, if I refer to being 'a builder of arcade machines' or 'arcade cabinets', a lot of people I meet look puzzled straight away and assume I'm on about fruit machines fr some reason.
Probably cos these days everyone associates arcades as the dingy little shops full of gambling addicts and dole dossers - even the seaside town arcades.
Shame really it all had to change. I had a vision when I was a kid that arcades would evolve into huge expensive total immersion gaming centres, not hangouts for people who are bored with shopping!

Ha!! Tell me about it. I have to deal with the gambling addicts, dole dossers, rude and obnoxious tourists, drunks, along with criminally intent and often violent morons, every day, and that is in a seaside arcade....
What happened to the dream?? Greed happened to it. Along with a now violently depraved society that thinks everbody else owes them something and think they can do whatever they like because of it, with no consequences.
Welcome to the generation that grew up on the PlaySatan, Alco Pops, and Thatchers me me me Britain.

Same here. An arcade is a place. Calling an arcade machine an "arcade" is like calling a coin-op washing machine a "laundromat".

:laugh2:
-
Hrm... I usually refer to them as Tempest, Space Duel, Star Wars, Tank II... Fathom, Shadow, Black Knight...
You know, the name on the marquee or backglass. :)
-
The Arcade Machine - sometimes shortened to The Machine.
It plays more games than Mame and I agree, an Arcade is a place
-
Where's the option for "Arcade Cabinet"?
I call mine "Arcade Cab" or "Arcade Machine", but my bro calls it "The arcade box that will never be finished."
-
Me: "Yeah, I have an arcade at home."
Someone: "Really, sweet, what game do you have?"
Me: "All of them."
Someone: "No way, it can play everything?"
Me: "Yes, of course."
Someone: "Where did you get it."
Me: "I built it myself."
Someone(assuming male): "No %$@&ing way, I have to see this."
-

then as soon as you start explaining the process thinking they might actually build one too their eyes glaze over in boredom

"the one at the end beside the NeoGeo cab and the Mortal Kombat cab"
I used to call it by the given name, Mortal Kabinet; but people thought i was talking about the MK2 machine.
