Title: Anyone else using Frets on Fire with their cabinets?
Post by: Sir Auros on January 22, 2008, 08:26:03 pm
It's a free Guitar Hero type game for the PC, Mac, and Linux platforms that also allows for importing of Guitar Hero I & II songs. You can use the Xbox 360 usb controller or (I've read) a PS2 controller with a usb adaptor. The keyboard is also an option.

It takes a really, REALLY long time to import Guitar Hero songs, but they seem to play ok once you get them. You can also import and edit your own songs, or download them from some forums devoted to the game.

I'm enjoying it for what it is (FREE), but you can't really fail the songs, the framerate seems off without affecting your rhythm, and it takes soooooo long to import songs.

Anyone else using it?

I recently discovered this game, and have to admit it's a bit addicting. I've never played any of the GH games, so I don't know how it compares. Look for the mods that are out there,... the one I found is a GH mod, combined with the herring mod,... It's MUCH more stable than the current release, and allows new features like failing.

Anyways, I like it enough that I am building a guitar controller out of a hacked up joypad I had laying around. Still in the planning stages at this point though.

I have FOF and guitar Hero 3 on my cabinet with 2 xbox360 guitars.  I'm using the guitar hero mod for FOF (the one that has 2 player modes and all the extras)  It's alot more fun than the regular FOF, but it's still just not the same as even the bad PC port of Hero 3.   My friends have spent hour upon hour playing GH3 on my cab.

I also tried Guitar Zero which works better than FOF, but has it's own set of issues (especially a problem with setting up the 360 explorers as controllers)

Perhaps it was just the songs I tried, but I found some synchronization issues with FoF that I could never get sorted. I never really got into it. I have loaded GH3 onto my Cab, but because it's an older machine with a crappy vid card and too little ram, it chugs along unplayably. At some point I hope to put a better machine in there, and then I'll be rockin' the GH.

I had performance issues with FoF on my main PC. I dont know why though as I use it to play PC games on and even the latest offerings from valve with full HDR work fine. I may revisit it or maybe just wait until my birthday because I have hinted to the other half about getting GH III as she likes it too :P .

I have messed about with this game and it is fun.

What I did was buy a toy guitar and gut it - installed an old xbox controller in the body and soldered the buttons to the controller buttons.

Then I cut the xbox plug off the end and soldered on a usb plug, installed the drivers to make xbox controller seen in windows and "hey presto".

Never played GH on consoles - but FOF rocks on the pc.   :applaud:

So can you use the guitar from the xbox360?

The Xbox 360 explorer guitar works (it's USB), and I hear the PS2 ones will work as well with a PS2 (the console, of course) to USB adaptor.

With guitar hero 3 its a wireless guitar with a phone jack on it. This one probably won't work.

Looks pretty cool - I'm definitely going to check this out. Thanks for the post!

I just checked out their site. In their forum it says if you have the GH 3 for Xbox 360 all you have to do is buy a wireless receiver for your pc and download a program called joy2key.

I've been running both now for some time, FoF has more songs, but doesnt look as good as GZ.
FoF as mentioned befor, you cannot lose/get boo'd off the track, which kinda makes it no fun.
GZ looks pretty good, and seems to be more on beat. Another great thing about GZ is all the songs have all difficulty levels, whereas FoF usually only have 1 or 2.
GZ has star power as well, but FoF doesn't.
As far as getting the guitar working, I use XBCD driver, http://www.redcl0ud.com/xbcd.html (http://www.redcl0ud.com/xbcd.html) , and have it configured with that. although both are a real pain to properly get working 100% its well worth it.
Here is a video of both in action on my cab.

There is a mod that features the "fail" feature, star-power (referred to as jurgen-power), and crowd noise. I haven't used it though, as it only works with an earlier version of FOF and is in development for the latest version.  There is also a GREAT mod called the RF-Mod with an option for Guitar Hero style graphics, and the thing that elevates this far beyond Guitar Zero IMO, 2 player mode. Split screen, just like guitar hero.

All thats missing now is whammy support. Hopefully that will be implemented.

And a tip, the X-box 360 guitars work PERFECTLY. Just download the drivers off Microsofts site and you're ready to go in FOF. No joy2key, no work-arounds, nothing. Even dual guitars work in FOF with 2 player mode, so you can bet I'll be having 2 of those things hanging off the side of my cab.

Nice I didn't know about the fail mod, I'll look into it
The RF mod is cool, as in my vid, I have the halo theme.
I also forgot to mention no whammy support for FoF, Thanks for pointing that out.
As well, as 2 player support in FoF, that I did not know about either.
