Title: cloverfield ***SPOILER WARNINGS***
Post by: danny_galaga on January 19, 2008, 02:26:42 am
i went and saw this last night. i really enjoyed it. spoiler:

its 'blair witch' meets 'godzilla'. what's not to like?
   ;D

the beginning dragged a little too long i must say (you could probably safely miss the first ten minutes), but once it found its stride it was unrelentless until the credits.

two thumbs up!

other movies i really enjoyed recently are: atonement, i am legend, and american gangster which stars hollywoods two crankiest actors. my hint for any denzel 'based on a true story' movie is to not know anything about the subject matter before you see the movie  ;)

According to the lawsuit several DEA agents currently have against NBC Universal, it's very loosely based on the truth.
*spoiler*at the end of the movie is says that three-fourths of New York's Drug Enforcement Agency was convicted thanks to Lucas' cooperation when apparently none were even charged with wrongdoing, let alone convicted

I plan on seeing cloverfield tommorrow. :)

I did, highlight the text to see it.  I didn't think that dea agents are unhappy with the "facts" in the film would be considered a spoiler

Saw Cloverfield....liked it...gave me a slight headache with the camera movement (expected).

A couple things to look for.  The very final scene  you see a flashback of two characters in Coney Island...look at the ocean in the background.

After the credits a sound bite is played...backwards.  Try to figure it out (what's said is all over the net).

I just got back from the movie and it was pretty good.  I'd say it's a 7 out of 10.

I think the movie was way too short though, it seemed to be a little over 65 minutes long, which seemed even shorter when there was literally (I checked my watch) 20 minutes of previews before it.  Oh well, still a very entertaining movie.

Well it must have some insanely long credits or they include the previews in the running time because it was a 2:35 movie, previews went until 2:55 and I was walking out of the theater at 4pm.

Good not great.

The smaller monsters were lame and really took away from having a giant Godzilla like monster.

In how many movies do we have to see little crab-like aliens ala Starship Troopers?  Seriously.  Every friggin' alien in every friggin' movie and/or video game is a fast moving crab-like creature with an exoskeleton. Enough already!

Isn't the whole movie based on a recovery of a tape from a handheld recorder? if so then the 65min time sounds about right for a camcorder  :)

Movie run times do not include the previews or credits at the end...  look it up.

Perhaps your movie started early?  Mine started at 10PM and we were out of the Theater at 11:35 or so...which is about right.  We left when the credits started to roll (I didn't wait until the end,  I heard about the "sound" online)...10 minutes or so of previews...just about right.

Well then maybe a reel was missing from the one I saw because I know the times I said are accurate.  And movie run times do include the end credits... look it up.

*edit* since I know you'll take my comment about the missing reel seriously, I should point out that it was a facetious remark, as was my comment about including the previews in the running time and the extra long end credits.  I'm not sure why you care so much about the running time, but I know what my watch read and the only way you'll convice me otherwise is if you can prove to me that I don't know how to tell time.

A friend of mine saw the movie this weekend too and he said that before the movie started an employee of the theater got in front of everyone and said that in previous screenings they've had 3 people that had epileptic episodes and two people throw-up, so make sure to leave the theater if you start to feel ill.  Pretty crazy.

Enjoyable. I much prefer "different" takes on a standard movie genre than hollywood dreck like the american Godzilla.

The camera work WAS bothersome, but moreso in the beginning. A lot has to do with the general blurriness of it. They should have shot it at higher resolution, considering it's being displayed on a big screen. Quick motion + blurry image = hard for eyes and brain to focus = problems for some people.

made me wanna throw up... :dizzy:

6.5/10. sure its "different" but doesnt make it a good one. somewhat nice visual effects but still dont see why people like to d!ck ride it so much. terrible acting btw. cloverfield is more like a video game FMV or a really long youtube clip.

IGN has pics of the $100 Cloverfield toy. If that is what the monster really looked like, then I can say I'm glad I didn't go see it. That looks stupid.

You see it 10 minutes into the movie, that isn't exactly a spoiler.

You do realize that not everyone has seen this movie right? That is the whole point of a "spoiler".

It is funny that they are still being protective of images of the monster, and at the same time detailed pics are freely available at Hasbro.

not seeing all of the monster at once is what made it good. unfortunately you cant make a toy monster that you cant see all of at once...

Finally saw this last night... good movie but I was happy when the people finally bought it.  They could have at least given us characters with some reason to give a crap about them.  I never did buy into the "stupid people do stupid things - will they survive" storyline.  Other than the main characters being total toolbags, good movie.  Had no problem with camera work and such but maybe that's because it was a 32" LCD and not a theater.

What I want to know is who pissed off Patrick Ewing enough that he destroyed Manhattan?

Saw this tonight and really enjoyed it. I thought they accomplished a hell of alot with character development in the time they had. The video cutting was confusing for a while though, and we thought that the brother was schtupping big bro's woman on the side. :laugh2: Good thing they clarified that eventually.

The action was great. I also didn't mind the camera work.

BTW, the movie clocked in right at around 1 hour 15 from intro to start of credits.

Char development was good for sure... but it made me dislike the people.  I was hoping they'd get offed at some point and someone less douchey would pick up the camera.
