Title: thoughts on CP art
Post by: BORIStheBLADE on January 11, 2008, 01:07:13 pm
I really don't want to put my name on my cab, I just want to make a "mame" arcade.
I decided to get this as a marquee and I have red buttons.

I would like some ideas or suggestions on some art for my CP overlay.

Thanks

Create your own name.  Few people slap their own name on it, but come up with something that is your own.

Outside of the guys in this forum and a few other nerds, noone will know what MAME is.  Think of it like naming a car.

If that is going to be your marquee, then I would make your CPO look the same.  Orange with the grid and the mame logo.

Well, it does say what it means right below the word MAME... :D

I know there's always been a strong aversion in the community to naming or theming a machine after MAME, but that's because we've all seen it hundreds of times.  As you noted, most of the people who will see the machine won't have been overexposed to the word MAME.

The problem with specific names is that people expect there to be a game by that name or theme on there.  All that leaves us with is the dreaded word with -CADE added to the end... *shudder*

I dont agree. The - CADE thing is such a cliche. Most people are a little more creative than that with there cabinet names. Just gotta look through "Project Anouncements" to see that. Is mame the only thing running on the cab, if it is going to use of emulators why not stick "Project 64" or "Kega Fusion" up there. Using the MAME name is so lame. Specially when it doesnt even use the MAME logo. Try to be a little more creative, read some of the threads in artwork and see what others are doing instead of using some stock art. Surely you want your cab to be unique? Otherwise you might as well have just bought a nice flat packed cab or a pre converted cab. With so many simple tutorials for graphic progs around you could easily do the work yourself or come up with an idea and pay one of the many users on the forum that produce art.

I see where your going with it. I could see myself getting sick of a "unique" name sooner than going with something simple. Its not like we all made our cabs from scratch or created our own software. The majority of us our running stuff others have made for us. Its like the cars we own. We mod them, but you don't see someone slapping a "Project something" over the Ford emblem.

To top it off I have no creativity when it comes to drawing up artwork.

 :soapbox:
I think your wrong there. The "majority" of people are building their own. Does buying a joystick for my cab make it any less my work? The "majority" of people take something they have seen or used to its next logical progression. I dont really think you can speak on behalf of the majority in this case. As for having no creativity you should consider having a go. You might be suprised at how much creativity you have. You built your own arcade controls after all.
